Reader's Digest July号の記事Elin Was Born Twiceからの抜粋です。
One day, when I'd been holding Elin against my body for four months, I went to change her nappy. I put her down on the changing table and, as always, I larked about with her and made farting noises on her tummy with my mouth. I'd done it hundreds of times before. This time, though, she gave me a smile - her first - and then she laughted from her toes.
名詞の "lark" は "skylark" の意味があることは知っていますが、動詞の意味は知りません。辞書を見ます。
・Oxford English Dictionary: Enjoy oneself by behaving in a playful and mischievous way: he jumped the fence to go larking the rest of the day
・Vocabulary.com: A lighthearted, fun episode is a lark. You could describe the wonderful day you spent with friends exploring little fishing towns along the coast of Maine as a lark.
Often unplanned, a lark can happen when you are feeling adventurous. You might decide on a lark to audition for a reality show -- and be picked! The act of trying something new like this can also be called larking. A lark is also a kind of songbird. Using lark to describe carefree fun might come from 1800s sailors' slang, skylark, to describe playing in the rigging of the ship, up high like a lark.
それなら "skylark" も動詞で上の "lark" と同じ意味・用法があるはずと辞書を見ると:
・Oxford English Dictionary: Pass time by playing tricks or practical jokes; indulge in horseplay: he was skylarking with a friend when he fell into a pile of boxes
"lark" と "skylark" はほんとど同じですね。
