lavage and debridement

Reacting to this startling conclusion, Dr. Nelda Wray, one of the authors of the Moseley study, noted, "The fact that the effectiveness of arthroscopic lavage and debridement in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee is no greater than that of placebo surgery makes us question whether the $1 billion spent on these procedures might be put to better use."
Oxford English Dictionary: washing out of a body cavity, such as the colon or stomach, with water or a medicated
Origin: late 18th century (in the general sense ‘washing, a wash’): from French, from laver 'to wash'
Wiktionary:
a. (medicine) the removal of dead, damaged, or infected tissue to improve the healing potential of the remaining healthy tissue. Often this removal is surgical, but other methods include mechanical, chemical, autolytic, and even maggot therapy.
b. (dentistry) the removal of the dental tartar that has accumulated over teeth, typically done using hand tools and ultrasound instruments.
・American Heritage Dictionary: Surgical excision of dead, devitalized, or contaminated tissue and removal of foreign matter from a wound.
Example from Wordnik: In that time she underwent expensive treatments for third-degree burns including debridement removal of dead tissue and skin grafting.
