The community of cardiac surgeons in Japan is so small that even the slightest rumour can quickly spread throughout the country. In particular, as cardiac surgery involves a large number of treatment devices, a lot of related companies have opportunities to come into contact with cardiac surgeons, and rumours and gossip often spread on these occasions. They are like bees swarming over flowers, becoming vectors that sprinkle rumour pollen all over the country. Scandals and troubles at other hospitals make good targets for such gossip, and cardiac surgeons tend to be more interested in the bad stories than the good ones. Of course, I am one of these gossipy surgeons.
I have many opportunities to interact with surgeons from other institutions, and in these conversations, I usually think it is important to have a lot of these gossip sources in addition to the topic of surgery. Having a wealth of topics to talk about can lead to good conversations, new information, and job opportunities.
One thing to be aware of is that in this small world where rumours spread quickly, even bad rumours about you can spread quickly. Therefore, I never tell negative information about myself to the outside world.
