"shoots itself in the foot" の意味は文字通りに解釈しても分かりますが、何かニュアンスがあるのかも確かめたいので辞書を見ます。

単なる自殺行為、自分で墓穴を掘ると言うよりも、意図したつもりではないのに自らがしたことで窮地に入ってしまうようですね。
