"retrench" は知らない単語ですが、タイトルの意味が良く分からない場合でも新聞記事は最初の文を読み続けるとたいてい意味が分かる様になっています。
Rohm Co. plans to reduce the total work force at group companies by around 1,000 in the fiscal year through March 2009, aiming to improve profitability in a tough market.
人員削減の話ができきましたね。　すると "retrench" は削減するとか節約するの意味だろうと見当が付きますが辞書で確かめます。

fetid

The Japan Times Weekend scene, Nov. 14-20 の見出しです。
Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture boasts a rich history and also a fetid foodstuff
水戸の話なので納豆の事だと推測できますが "fetid" は珍味の、粘りのある、臭い、等々の可能性があり特定できません。　本文を読むと次ぎのような説明があります。
Many foreigners here can never get used to the stuff. "It's fetid, slimy and visually repellent." a lady friend from the U.K. once exclaimed to me.
"slimy" は粘りのあるに対応するので "fetid" は別の意味のようだ。　早く辞書を見よう。

やはり臭いでしたね。　でも多くの日本人はこの臭い納豆が好きなんですよね。　記事にもこの様に書いてありました。

technicolor

これもThe Japan Times Weekend scene, Oct 17-23 に出ていた文です。

"technicolor" と言えば以前 "
hork" と言う単語の話題の時に取り上げた "technicolour yawn" を思い出します。　引用文の "technicolor" は "technicolour yawn" (="vomit") の様な品の無い言葉ではなく、

"technicolor" は商標からできた言葉なのですね。　辞書の例文も新聞記事と同様に紅葉を形容しているのは偶然ではないようです。

sumac

ジュニア小説の "A Wrinkle in Time"　からです。
And though it was warmer than it had been when they so precipitously left the apple orchard, there was a faintly autumnal touch to the air; near them were several small trees with reddened leaves very like sumac, and a big patch of goldenrod-like flowers.
"sumac" は何かの樹木である事は容易に推測がつきます。日本にはない植物かも知れないし気にすることも無いかとも思いますが、植物好きな事と、中学生程度が読む本なのでこの程度は常識かと思い一応辞書を引きます。　説明が一番詳しいWebster's Revised Unabridged Dictionaryから引用します。
(Bot.) Any plant of the genus Rhus, shrubs or small trees with usually compound leaves and clusters of small flowers. Some of the species are used in tanning, some in dyeing, and some in medicine. One, the Japanese Rhus vernicifera, yields the celebrated Japan varnish, or lacquer.
最後に書かれているのは漆のことだなと思いますが、考えて見れば漆の木は実際には見たこともありません。
Wikipediaには次ぎのように書いてありました。
Lacquer Tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum or formerly Rhus verniciflua), also called Varnish Tree, Japanese lacquer Tree, Japanese Varnish Tree and Japanese Sumac, is a species of genus Toxicodendron (formerly Rhus) that grows in East Asia, in regions of China, Korea and Japan.
なるほどやはり "Japanese lacquer Tree" = "Japanese Sumac" 位は覚えた方が良さそうだ。

tony

The Nikkei Weekly, Oct 20 の記事にあった興味を引く単語です。
Toyota Motor opened a Lexus showroom in the tony Tokyo district of Aoyama on Oct.10 - just as consumers are cutting back on luxury goods amid an ever gloomier economy.
大文字で始まるTonyではなく小文字で始まる "tony" は知りませんでした。　早速辞書を見ます。OneLook Quick Definitionsでは人名としか載っていないので Dictionary.com を見ると：
high-toned; stylish: a tony nightclub.
とありました。　東京生まれの東京育ちでも青山は秩父の宮ラグビー場にたまに行く位で余り良く知らないのですが、青山はしゃれた街と言う事なのでしょうね。 でも先日たまたま千駄ヶ谷に用があって帰りは地下鉄の外苑前駅まで歩いたのですが、途中に「青山キラー通り」という通りがありました。　キラーとくると "killer" しか思い起こせないのですが、何故「青山キラー通り」と名付けられたのでしょうね？　"tony" と "killer" では大違いですよね。

arrest, sequel

１１月３日にTo stop; to check or hinder the motion or action ofを意味する "arrest" の事を書きましたが、ジュニア小説の "A Wrinkle in Time"　にも "arrest" が次ぎのように出てきました。
As the boy saw them he slowed down on his machine and stopped, his hand arrested as it was about to plunge into the paper bag.
少年は "machine" に乗って新聞を配達しているところでした。 "machine" は引用文のちょっと前に "riding a machine that was something like a combination of a bicycle and a motorcycle" と説明があります。
"arrest" はやはり逮捕だけの意味ではないのですね。

ape

The Japan Times Weekend scene, Oct 17-23 に出ていた文です。
Just as other restaurants copied the Shunju style, it now is aping itself.
日本語で言う猿真似と同じ表現のようですが一応辞書で確かめます。
Dictionary.com:　to imitate; mimic: to ape another's style of writing.
American Herritage Dictionary:　To mimic slavishly but often with an absurd result.
WordNet: imitate uncritically and in every aspect; "Her little brother apes her behavior"
"uncritically"とありますが、猿真似と同様に皮肉が込められている気がします。

getup

ジュニア小説の "A Wrinkle in Time"　からです。
Even though she was used to Mrs.Whatsit's odd getup (and the very oddness of it was what made her seem so comforting), she realized with a fresh shock that it was not Mrs. Whatsit herself that she was seeing at all.
長いこと英語を勉強しているのですが "Get up!" は知っていても "getup" は全く初めて会う単語です。
早速辞書を引きます。

Dictionary.com:
1. costume; outfit: Everyone will stare at you if you wear that getup.

Reader's Digest７月号のLife's Like Thatと題したコラムからです。
Even at age 88, my mother was vain about her looks. At a party, an old friend exclaimed, "Edith, you haven't changed in 20 years."
"Oh," said Mum, horrified. "I hope I didn't look like this 20 years ago."
いずれにせよもし "You look young." と言われたら、もう若くはないと言うことでしょうね。
