この小説の翻訳者（Giles Murray）は慣用句を沢山使っています。 "fly off the handle" も慣用句ですね。

・Collins Dictionary: informal: to become suddenly extremely angry: I can't imagine why he flew off the handle like that
・Cambridge English Dictionary: to react in a very angry way to something that someone says or does: He's extremely irritable - he flies off the handle at the slightest thing.

hammer and tongs

東野圭吾の小説 "New Comer" を読んでいます。

'Only old-timers would say something like that.'
'Those "old-timers" are important customers for us.'
The two of them went at it hammer and tongs. Naoya was struck in the middle, unable to take sides.

"hammer and tongs" も大分前(7/28/2013)に取り上げた慣用句でした。前回はMerriam-Websterの辞書だけの引用だったので、今回は別の辞書の説明も見ました。

・Collins Dictionary: If you say that someone was going at something hammer and tongs, you mean that they were doing it with great energy.: He loved gardening. He went at it hammer and tongs as soon as he got back from work.
・Dictionary: In a manner indicating seriousness of intent and capability of harm.: When they had an argument they went at it hammer and tongs.

throw...for a loop

'It threw our forensics guys for a loop. They were like, what's this all about? I was pretty surprised when they told me that one of the cakes was spiked with wasabi. Unbelievable!'

"threw our forensics guys for a loop" は 7/20/2009に取り上げた knock/throw you for a loop ですね。

bit on the side

'Ah...' gurgles Shuhei, staring at Taiji in surprise.
'The wife said something about a detective from Nihonbashi Precinct giving you grief about those cakes. There's no need to worry. They've nothing to do with the murder.'
'I wasn't worried...'
'No need to playact with me, kid. I know what you were thinking: that the murdered woman was my bit on the side?'
Taiji held up his pinky finger in the Japanese sign for 'girlfriend.'

小指を立てて「彼女」を意味するのは日本だけの仕草であることが上記引用文の最後で分かります。一応 "bit on the side"　を辞書で確認します。

search me

東野圭吾の小説 "New Comer" を読んでいます。

'Oh, boss, I forgot. There's a guy from the police outside. Says he wants to speak to you.' Akifumi showed him Kaga's card.
'The police. What's the hell for?'
'Search me.' Akifumi tilted his head to one side.

"Search me." はいかにも口語的な表現ですね。文脈からすると、「知りません」の意味だと思いますが、辞書を見ます。

・Collins Dictionary: You say ' search me' when someone asks you a question and you want to emphasize that you do not know the answer.　[informal, emphasis]　'So why did he get interested all of a sudden?'—'Search me.'

先週久しぶりの旅行で浜松市で開かれている花万博に行って来ました。新幹線にも久しぶりに乗りました。旅行の前日からのどが痛くなり、未だに治っていません。さて、東野圭吾の小説 "New Comer" を読んでいます。

Kaga didn't say another word. Shuhei took care to avoid making eye contact.
After Kaga left, Yoriko called Shuhei over when he was carrying dirty dishes to the kitchen.
'That detective from the Nihonbashi precinct gave you the third degree, did he?'

"give you the third degree" での辞書検索ではほとんどの辞書の項目にはありませんでしたが、"the third degree" で検索するとほとんどの辞書に説明がありました。

・Oxford English Dictionary: (informal) to question somebody for a long time and in a careful and detailed way; to use threats or violence to get information from somebody
・Collins Dictionary: If you say that someone has been given the third degree, you mean that they have been questioned or criticized severely. [informal] She's phoned to complain and you're suddenly being given the third degree.
