私が好きな植物の話題です。RD Jan. 2007の投書にこんなのがありました。
Flying to Toronto at Chrismas time, I arrived at the airport check-in. As the security guard cleared my bags, I notiecd a sprig of mistletoe dangling jus above him.
"What's the mistletoe for?"
I asked.
"That?" He smiled. "That's so you can kiss your laggage goodbye."
預けたカバンに別れのキス（恐らく紛失の可能性を示唆していると推測する）をすることは分かりますが、それと "mistletoe" の関係が分からないので辞書で調べると "mistletoe" はヤドリギの事で、成句に "kissing under the mistletoe"（クリスマスのヤドリギ飾りの下にいる乙女にはキスしてよいという習慣がある）がある事が分かりました。 そのいわれについてMSNのEncartaに次のような説明があります。
According to one explanation, the Norse god Balder was killed with an arrow made of mistletoe. The rest of the gods were sad, so they decided to bring him back to life. The Goddess of Love then dedicated the mistletoe to Balder--and anyone passing under it must receive a kiss to show tribute to this symbol of love.
この "kissing under the mistletoe" は西洋人の常識のようですね。
