A descendant of two of the oldest Anglo-Saxon families in England, he was often at Court, where he became a boon companion of the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII. Edward was a "clubbable man," as Dr. Johnson would have said, and since none of the clubs in London, not even White's, founded a new one in 1869, the Marlborough Club.
