The Game of Her Lifeにあった単語を取り上げます。
Midway through her match against Elaine Lin Yu-Tomg of Taiwan, Phiona makes a tactical error, costing her two pawns. Her opponent makes a similar blunder, but Phiona doesn't realise until it's too late. From then on, she stares crestfallen as the rest of the moves play out, and she loses a match she thinks she should have won.
Phiona bolts to the parking lot, boards a shuttle bus alone, return to her hotel room and bawls into her pillow.
Macmillan Dictionary:
- to run in a sudden way, especially because you are frightened: There was a gunshot and the horse bolted.
- to escape from a place: When the guard came back, he found that the prisoner had bolted.
・Wiktionary: To flee, to depart, to accelerate suddenly. Seeing the snake, the horse bolted.: The actor forgot his line and bolted from the stage.
