eleventy-first

土曜日は卓球の試合、日曜日は浦安シティマラソンと週末は忙しかったのでブログを更新する暇はありませんでした。さて、Reader's Digest 12月号にTolkien 'bout a revolution How J.R.R. and his merry band of hobbits changed our worldと題された記事がありました。 Tolkien も "hobbits" も全く知りませんでしたが、記事を読んだら The Lord of the Rings、The Hobbitの作者である事が分かりましたが、映画はほとんど見ないのでThe Lord of the Ringsもタイトルを知っているだけで内容は全く知りません。余り厚い本で無ければ読みたいのですが、この手の本は500ページ位ありそうなのでまだ私の読書スピードでは手に余ります。記事の中に気になる変った表現があったのでその個所を引用します。
The Hobbit celebrated its 75th birthday in September - just 36 years short of Bilbo Baggins' fabled eleventy-first birthday!
この "eleventy-first" の "eleventy" の表現は初めて見ます。多分 "110" を意味していると思いますが、辞書で確認します。
・Urban Dictionary: originally derived from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Bilbo Baggin's eleventy-first birth day was the setting of the opening chapter. Since used by people all over the world.
Bilbo reached the ripe old age of eleventy-one.

"eleventy" はTolkienが使う前にもあった様ですが、Tolkienが使ったのでポピュラーな表現となったようです。
