hove into earshot/heave into view

At the time I was a "flea," to use the macho, old-school surgeions' derogatory term for overly analytic internal medicine nerds, I embraced the nick name, enthusiastically hopping up and down while spouting medical minutiae and arcane diagnoses whenever my superiors hove into earshot.
"hove into earshot" の "hove" は動詞の過去形だと思いますが、その現在形がそもそも分かりません。結局 "heave" の過去形と分かりましたが、それでも "hove into earshot" の意味が分かりません。慣用句ではないかと睨み調べたが、辞書には "heave into earshot" の慣用句はありませんでした。しかし,"heave in/into view" と言う慣用句があり次の説明がありました。

なるほど、"heave in/into view/sight" なら動詞の "heave" が使われるのは分かります。 "heave/hove into earshot" では理屈に合いませんが、、"heave in/into view/sight" から派生した表現に違いありません。この表現は辞書には載っていませんが、Zoobiquityの著者以外にもこの表現が使われているのはGoogle検索で確認できました。
