"There were some gimmes right off the bat. The design presumes five hundred kilograms of Martian soil and rock samples. Obviously we won't do that. Also, there's just one passenger instead of six.
"gimmes" の意味が分からないので辞書を引きます。
・Oxford English Dictionary: A thing that is very easy to perform or obtain, especially in a game or sport.: 'the kick would hardly be a gimme in that wind’
・Cambridge English Dictionary: something that is extremely easy to do: That first test question was a gimme, for sure.

"akimbo" は英語らしくないので以前に取り上げた気がしますが、記録にありません。そこで復習です。
・Oxford English Dictionary: With hands on the hips and elbows turned outward.: 'she stood with arms akimbo, frowning at the small boy’
・Cambridge English Dictionary: If a person's arms are akimbo, they are bent at the elbows (= the middle part of the arms where they bend) with the hands on the hips: He stood, arms akimbo, refusing to move.

"ping" はDOSコマンドやUNIXコマンドを使っていた二～三十年前に通信トラブルを確認するのに使ったことのあるコマンドですが、Windowsになってからは使ったことはないので、忘れかけている言葉ですが、ＳＦを読む人は知っている言葉なのでしょうか？

"switchblade" は刃のついた工具の様ですが、一般的な工具なのでしょうか？

いわゆる飛び出しナイフの事ですね。もっとも私は本物の飛び出しナイフも見たことも触ったこともありませんが。

今年は何を読もうかと考えてみました。
小説ではKazuo Ishiguroの作品が好きなので、地元の図書館にある8冊の内でまだ読んでいない 'The Buried Giant'と'The Unconsoled'を読みたいのですが、今まで洋書が貸出中で読めないことはほとんど無かったのに、Ishiguro氏がノーベル賞を受賞したので、Ishiguro氏の本は突然予約が殺到し、どの本も予約の件数が１０件以上で、'Never Let Me Go' などは８８件もの予約が入っているので読める順番が回ってくるまで一年以上もかかる計算になります。
そんな訳でIshiguro作品は今年は諦めて、村上春樹氏が好きだと言っている Chandler作品と日本人作家の英訳本を読もうと考えています。
小説以外の本はTEDや新聞の書評などで見聞きして読みたくなった本のリストが何十冊以上もあるので、気になる本から適当に選ぼうと思います。
昨年読んだ本からブログに投稿するメモが３週間分位できているので、多分今月一杯は私のブログで取り上げる内容は昨年読んだ本からです。
