be well rid of

A PALE VIEW OF HILLS by Kazuo Ishiguroを読んでいます。前回取り上げたJiroとその父との会話の続きにあった表現です。 父は元教師でJiroと次ぎの会話に出てくるHe = Shigeo Matsudaは教え子の様です。父が言います。
"It was quite extraordinary. He was talking about Dr. Endo and myself, about our retirements. If I understood him correctly, he was implying that the profession was well rid of us.
"well rid of" の意味がピンときません。 "rid" で思いつくのは "get rid of" だけですが、これも英国の慣用句でしょうか？　辞書を見ます。
辞書で調べている内に気が付きました。バカの一つ覚えで、私は "get rid of" だけを覚えていて、それだけではなく、何かを取り除く主語は人間と決め付けていたことでした。 まず、 "rid" だけでも　"relieve from " の意味があり、 "get rid of" だけではなく "be rid of" も良く使われ、someoneだけではなく、something/someplaceも主語になる事が分かりました。 そして "be well rid of" の例文を載せている辞書も次ぎの二つにありました。
・Macmillan Dictionary: be well rid of someone/something (= be in a much better position without someone or something): Most people would say you were well rid of him.
・Oxford English Dictionary: be well rid of: be in a better state for having removed (a troublesome or unwanted person or thing): she thought the world was well rid of him.
結局私は "get rid of" しか知らない "one-trick pony" (Ref. http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2010/3/29 ) で、主語は人と決め付けた "one-track minded" な馬鹿の一つ覚えでした。　けれど、馬鹿の一つ覚えを英語で "He that knows little often repeats it." とも言うそうですが、覚えるのに繰り返す事は必要で、良い方法であると思います。
