relief

ソメイヨシノは散りましたが八重桜（double cherry blosom）はまだ咲いています。ツツジ（azalea）も咲き始めハナミズキ（dogwood http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/113135）は満開です。　さて今週のジョークです。
The relief teacher asked my four-year-old what his name was. "Spider-Man," said my son.
"No, I mean your real name," said the teacher.
My son apologised. "Oh, I'm sorry. It's Peter Parker."
私は "Peter Parker" が誰だか知らないので直ぐにはこのオチが分かりませんでしたが、スパイダーマンを演じている役者ではないかと推測しました。　調べると話の上でのスパイダーマンの本名なのですね。　スーパーマンの本名がクラーク・ケントと言うのは覚えているのですが。（年がばれますね）
ところで英語の話になりますが、リリーフはリリーフピッチャーとして野球だけで使う言葉と思っていましたが上の文のように学校の先生でも使えるのですね。

crop up

英国人のDominic Cheethamさんが書いたエッセイ "Bites of Britain, Taste of Japan" を図書館から借りて読んでいますが、とても面白い本（元々２００６年度の「ラジオビジネス英会話」テキストに連載されたエッセイの抜粋だそうです）で、英国人の著者から見た日本の事や、米国英語とイギリス英語の違いにも触れていて、米国英語しか馴染みのない私にはとても新鮮な話題が満載です。　Santa Clausの事を英国ではFather Chrismasと言うとか、"beverage" の意味も米国英語と違うとか非常に興味の湧く内容ですが、今日取り上げる表現は単に私が知らなかったと言うだけの英語です。
Father Chrismas is a mystery. Of course, we know all sorts of things about him; his big white beard, his big round tummy, his bright red clothes, we know about the magical reindeer who pull him and his sledge through the sky, carrying presents around the world. He crops up in films, on television, in books and comics, posters and pictures-everwhere.
"crops up" の "crop" ですが、もちろん穀物の意味は知っていますが動詞のこの様な使い方は知りません。　もっともこの文では前後から判断し、「現れる」と言うような意味ではないかと推測はつきますが、果たしてどうでしょうか？　辞書を見ます。

Compact Oxford English Dictionary: (crop up) appear or occur unexpectedly.
単に「現れる」のではなく、予期せぬ時あるいは突然に現れるのですね。

spoon

Reader's Digest ２月号(2009年)のWord Powerのコーナーはバレンタインディの月なのでLove Connectionと題された特集でした。　私が知っている単語はいつもの特集よりも比較的多かったのですが "spoon" もLove Connectionの類に入るとは知りませんでした。Reader's Digestの解答・説明は次ぎのようでした。
spoon: To kiss and caress. Under the moon in June, sweethearts spoon and swoon.
一応辞書でも確認します。
Dictionary.com:　Informal. to show affection or love toward by kissing and caressing, esp. in an openly sentimental manner.
ついでに "swoon" も調べます。
Dictionary.com: 1. to faint; lose consciousness. 2. to enter a state of hysterical rapture or ecstasy: The teenagers swooned at the sight of the singing star.
"spoon and swoon" と一緒にすれば覚えられるかな。

precocious

English Journal、2009年３月号の映画The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttonについての記事からです。
A precocious little girl when they meet in the 1970s, it is the aged Daisy who on her deathbed in 2005 introduces us to Benjamin by asking her daughter (Julia Ormond) to read aloud from his diary.
以前 "precocial" とその対語 “altricial” を話題にしたので上の文中の "precocious" は "precocial" の形容詞形と思いました。 前回 "precocial" を話題にした時は辞書を引かなかったので今回は辞書で "precocious" を確認します。

葉が出る前に花が咲くソメイヨシノも "precocious" treeと言えるのですね。
ただ "precocial" は名詞としても形容詞としても使われるので形容詞としての "precocial" と "precocious" は置き換え可能なのか何か使い分けがあるのか気になります。

mudra

通訳ガイドの試験を受ける前に講談社のバイリンガル・ブックスシリーズの本を何冊か読みましたが、久しぶりにそのシリーズの『英語で話す「仏教」Q&A』を図書館で見つけたので読みました。　その中の真言宗の説明文に "Such communication is achieved by forming mudras with the hands, reciting mantras and keeping the Buddha in one's mind." があり、聞き慣れない "mudras" の個所は日本語で『手に印を結び』とありましたが、英米の人でも "mudras" でその様な意味が分かるのか疑問に思い "mudras" を辞書で見てみました。
Dictionary.com:
1. Hinduism, Buddhism. any of a series of arm and hand positions expressing an attitude or action of the deity.
2. any of various similar gestures used in India's classical dancing to represent specific feelings.
Wikepedia: A mudra (Sanskrit: lit. "seal") is a symbolic or ritual gesture in Hinduism and Buddhism. While some mudras involve the entire body, most are performed with the hands and fingers. Mudra (Sanskrit) is "spiritual gesture" and energetic "seal of authenticity" employed in the iconography and spiritual practice of Indian religions and Taoism.
"mudras" は複数形で単数形は "mudra" でした。（当たり前か）
これは英米人でも教養のある人しか知らない単語ではないでしょうか。

plum job

講談社のパワー・イングリッシュシリーズの『英語で「四字熟語」３６５』を例によって図書館から借りて読んでいます。　以前、知っている英語でも、日本語からその英語がさっと出ないことを書いたことがありますが、漢字の「四字熟語」を英語で何と言うか中々スラスラとはでないですよね。　それができるようなら通訳も簡単にできるような気がします。　この本の良いところは、結構知らない「四字熟語」や（例えば、蟷螂之斧）、読み方を間違って覚えていたもの（例えば、捲土重来はケンドジュウライと読んでいました。どこかの首相の事を笑えないですね）もあり日本語の勉強にもなる事です。　依怙贔屓（ワープロでないとこんな漢字は書けません）の項の英語での例の文を引用します。
It is understandable that the section chief would be partial to people from his alma mater. However, if he continues to assign all the plum projects to them, the others may go on strike.
興味を覚えたのはこの文で依怙贔屓に対応する表現 "be partial to" ではなく、"plum projects" です。　本の説明文には「割の良い仕事」とありましたが、辞書で "plum" の意味を確認します。
Dictionary.com: extremely desirable, rewarding, profitable, or the like: a plum job in the foreign service.
Merriam-Webster: something superior or very desirable ; especially : something desirable given in return for a favor
現在就活中の私としては "plum job" は夢ですね。

tween

Reader's Digest １月号(2009年)に "THIS YEAR'S COVETED GADGETS" のページがありその中の一文です。
This minuscule marvel weighs a mere 1040 grams and is targeted at teen, tween, travellers or anyone who likes their laptops compact.
"tween" は初めて見る単語ですが十代より少し上の年齢の若者の意味かなと推測しますが、辞書を見るとDictionary.comでは "'tween" の項に次ぎの説明がありました：
Also, tween, tweeny. a youngster between 10 and 12 years of age, considered too old to be a child and too young to be a teenager.とあります。　あれっ、という感じです。 もう一つの辞書American Herritage Dictionaryでも確認すると、A child between middle childhood and adolesence, usually between 8 and 12 years old. となっていました。
そこで "teen" を確認すると：

長い間 "teen"、 "teenager" は十代の若者と思っていましたが、１３歳から１９歳までの若者のことで、 "tween" あるいは "tweeny" はそれより若い、つまり小学生の上級生の年齢の子供、子供とティーンエイジャーの間、"tween"の若者なのですね。（私にはやはり子供に見えますが）

ham

少女小説 "Come A Stranger" の一節です。
"The rest of the boys, Mr. Speedy Delivery and King Friday and Handyman Negri, would ham it up too much, but John didn't care so much about them,..."
"ham it up" が分かりません。 "ham" は食べるハムしか知りません。 早速 "ham" を調べます。

また "ham it up" はイデオムで to overact; ham とありました。
思い出しました、大根役者の事を "ham" と言うのを。

Don't stew.

Reader's Digest １月号(2009年)の "NEED TO KNOW WORK STRESS SOS" と題されたコラムの一文です。
Don't stew instead, take it out on a small ball you keep on your desk. Squeeze it, throw it in the air, or even take it outside and bounce, throw and catch it untill you feel better.
シチューと言えば煮込み、つまり "Don't stew." はストレスになるような事はいつまでもグズグズと考え込まないとの意味と想像は付きますが念のために辞書で確認します。
