truth before convention

今日が正月休み最後の日です。休みに入ってから毎日続けたジョッギングは三日坊主に終わらず、今日も天気が良いので、何とか走れそうです。昨日はちょっと遠出をして葛飾柴又まで江戸川を上って走りました。家から１２ｋｍ程度と思って走ったのですが、片道１７ｋｍもあり、おまけに往き帰りも道を間違え予定の時間を大幅に超過しました。
さて、昨年読んだ "The Story of My Life" からの引用です。
In my college reading I have become somewhat familiar with French and German literature. The German puts strength before beauty, and truth before convention, both in life and in literature. There is a vehement, sledgehammer vigour about everything that he does. When he speaks, it is not to impress others, but because his heart would burst if he did not find an outlet for the thoughts that burn in his soul.
知らない単語や難しい構文はありませんが、 "The German puts strength before beauty, and truth before convention" の台詞は簡単で応用が利きそうですね。 "Sake before cherries", "eating before fighting", "sweets before diet", etc.

riddled/riddle

Reader's Digest 10月号の記事 "Osteoporosis: Invasion of Bone Sappers" から引用します。
It is natural for your bones to weaken as you age. But some people, particularly women, lose so much bone matter that their skeltons become riddled with weak spots.
"riddle" と言うと謎とか、謎をかけるしか頭に浮かびませんが、骨粗しょう症の話なので、骨に穴が空く、租になると言うような意味の様ですが、"riddle" にその様な意味があるか調べます。
・American Heritage Dictionary: To pierce with numerous holes; perforate: riddle a target with bullets.
・Macmillan Dictionary: to make a lot of holes in someone or something, especially with bullets; riddle with: A gunman riddled the facade of the building with bullets.
"riddled" で調べると、
・Cambridge Advanced Learner's English Dictionary: full of holes; He wore an old jacket riddled with holes.
・ WordNet: (often followed by `with') damaged throughout by numerous perforations or holes ("A sweater riddled with moth holes")
やはり引用文の "riddled" は穴だらけの状態になっている事を示しているのですね。

secret compact

昨日は箱根駅伝を見た後に大学ラグビーの準決勝第一回戦を見、ＴＶは一時休んで、ジョッギングに出かけ、帰ってから再び録画して置いた準決勝の第二回戦を見ました。始めは明治も頑張っているなと思いましたが、途中から早稲田のペースになり早稲田の圧勝でした。ＴＶのスポーツ観戦ではラグビーが一番好きなのでラグビー中継のある日だけは冬も悪くないと思う私です。　夜はテニスの初練習をしたので昨日はスポーツデイになりました。
さて、英語の話題に移ります。"The Story of My Life" でヘレン・ケラーがシェークスピアについて書いている個所からです。
I have since read Shakespeare's plays many times and know parts of them by heart, but I cannot tell which of them I like best. My delight in them is as varied as my moods. The little songs and the sonnets have a meaning for me as fresh and wonderful as the dramas. But, with all my love for Shakespeare, it is often weary work to read all the meanings into his lines which critics and commentators have given them. I used to try to remember their interpretations, but they discouraged and vexed me; so I made a secret compact with myself not to try any more. This compact I have only just broken in my study of Shakespeare under Professor Kittredge. I know there are many things in Shakespeare, and in the world, that I do not understand; and I am glad to see veil after veil lift gradually, revealing new realms of thought and beauty.
この "I made a secret compact" は「密かに誓った」と言う感じですが、私の知っている "compact" は日本語にもなっているコンパクトの意味しか知らないので辞書で確かめます。
・Cambridge Advanced Learner's English Dictionary: a formal agreement between two or more people, organizations or countries; They made a compact not to reveal any details.
・Random House Unabridged Dictionary: a formal agreement between two or more parties, states, etc.; contract: the proposed economic compact between Germany and France.

考えて見ると "pact" に "agreement" の意味がありましたね。

New Year Resolution

昨年は新年の抱負として、４冊の英書を読むことを挙げました。残念ながらその内の二冊は読了しましたが残りの二冊は読み残しの部分がまだかなりあります。今年の抱負をどうするか考えていたら次ぎの助言がインターネットにありました。

この後にもリストは続くのですが、ここで決めました。今年の方針は、目標を低くする、そして抽象的にする（仕事ではこんな方針は絶対に許されないでしょうが、自分の事は自分で勝手に決められるのが良いですね。）。そこで、次ぎの３点を今年の抱負とします。
1. Read more.
2. Lose 1 kg. (at least just before races)
3. Enjoy table tennis, tennis and jogging more.

commute

明けましておめでとう御座います。今年も去年と同じ様に仕事、スポーツそして英語の勉強を続けたいと思います。去年は旅行にほとんど行かなかったので今年はできれば一度は海外旅行に行きたいと思っています。　
さて今日の単語は去年読んだ英文からです。　Dec. 18, 2011のThe Japan Times Onlineの記事 "Manila deports pardoned pot-runner" にあった "commute" の用法は知りませんでした。　次ぎの文はその記事からの抜粋です。
Suzuki was convicted and sentenced to death in 1995 for possession of 1.5 kg of marijuana at the Bacolod City airport in the central Philippines.
The Supreme Court commuted the sentence to life in prison on appeal.
"commute" の意味として私は通勤する、通学するしか知りませんが、上の文での意味は、死刑であったのが無期懲役になったのですから、罪を軽減する意味と推測できますので辞書で確認します。
・Cambridge Advanced Learner's English Dictionary: to change a punishment to one that is less severe; Her sentence was commuted from death to life imprisonment.
・American Heritage Dictionary: To change (a penalty, debt, or payment) to a less severe one.
"commute" には罪を軽減/通学/通勤する意味以外に次ぎの意味もあることが辞書に載っていました。(from WordNet)
