baying sound

Animal Farmの話の展開は早く、革命によりManor Farmは動物達のAnimal Farmに変りました。そして、動物のリーダー間の権力闘争も始まってきたようです。
At this there was a terrible baying sound sound outside, and nine enormous dogs wearing brass-studded collars came bounding into the barn.
"baying sound" がどんな音か分かりませんが、その後に大きな犬が飛び込んできたとあるので、犬の遠吠えの様でもあります。辞書で確認します。

犬の遠吠え、当たらずとも遠からず。明日から旅行で鳥取に行って来ます。４０年振りの鳥取です。そんな訳でブログは来週まで休みます。

the last atom

Animal FarmでboarのMajorが演説をしています。
Let us face it, our lives are miserable, laborious and short. We are born, we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies, and those of us who are capable of it are forced to work to the last atom of our strength; and the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty.
"to the last atom of our strength" の個所の "atom" ですが、 "atom" と言うと、原子と原子爆弾あるいは原子エネルギーを連想します。辞書で他の意味があるか調べます。
ほとんどの辞書では "atom" のエネルギーの意味としては "nulear energy" の説明になっていましたが、次ぎの辞書の説明が上の引用文の意味としては最も合っていると思います。

歳をとったせいもありますが、日頃は "to the last atom of our strength" まで無理をする事はありませんが、マラソンの後半となると "to the last atom of our strength" まで頑張らないと歩きたくなります。

file into

Animal Farmを読んでいます。単語や慣用句をブログで採り上げる目的は基本的には覚えたいからですが、実際は採り上げた表現の半分も覚えられませんが、Animal Farmに出てきた次ぎの "file" は数年前に覚えられた単語です。
The two horses had just lain down when a brood of ducklings which had lost their mother filed into the barn, cheeping feebly and wandering from side to side to find some place where they would not be trodden on.
...

Red Sox fan

レッドソックスが優勝したとTVのニュースで見ました。
A teacher asks her students if they're Yankees fans.
All of the hands go up except for one student.
"Okay, Bobby. What team are you a fan of?"
"The Red Sox."
"Why's that?"
"Well, my parents are both Red Sox fans, so I'm a Red Sox fan too."
"That's not a good answer, Bobby
If your parents were both morons, would you be a moron too?"
"No, that would make me a Yankees fan!"
このジョークで連想するのは次ぎの台詞です。
Would you jump off of a bridge if everyone did?

Automagically

Reader's Digest June, 2013に出ていた Social Vocab（新語）を紹介します。 Something technological that happens without your understanding how is "automagical". Sometimes it's desirable: "My phone automagically re-set itself to Daylight Savings Time" and sometimes not: "My computer has automagically deleted all my sent emails." 面白い造語ですね。

pop-hole

George OrwellのAnimal Farmを読むことにしました。この本はもう半世紀近く前に高校で英語のテキストとして読んだ話です。予習も復習も余りしない生徒だったので、授業についていけなかったのか、あるいは部活のラグビーで疲れるのか、授業中よく居眠りをして叱られた記憶はありますが、Animal Farmの中身の記憶はほとんどありません。
Chapter Iの最初の文に早速興味の湧く表現がありました。
Mr. Jones, of the Manor Farm, had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the pop-holes. With the ring of light from his lantern dancing from side to side he lurched across the yard, kicked off his boots at the back door, drew himself a last glass of beer from the barrel in the scullery, and made his way up to bed, where Mrs Jones was already snoring.
ニワトリ小屋の話をしている個所なので "pop-holes" はその出入り口の事だと分かりますが、鳩時計の鳩が顔を出す窓を連想させる言葉ですね。 "pop-holes" の説明を辞書でみます。
・Oxford English Dictionary: a hole in a fence or divider through which animals can pass, especially one allowing poultry access to the outside or allowing piglets access to the sow.
"pop-hole" で検索に引っ掛かったのは上の辞書だけで、次ぎの二つの辞書は "pophole" として説明がありました。
・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: a small opening through which an animal may pass (as from a coop to an outdoor run)
・Wiktionary: A small open door in the side of housing for poultry, normally connected to the ground via a ramp
