collect oneself

たまたま読んだ "Crunch time" と題されたインターネットの記事 "bowhunter" にちょっと前に知った"apply oneself"（「打ち込む」、「専念する」）(April 17の投稿）と同様に 動詞＋oneselfで元の動詞だけの意味とはかなり異なる意味になる例がありました。

The more excited the shooter gets, the worse he performs. The most important three words in the entire story occurred in the last paragraph; "I collected myself." Think about that for a moment. If I hadn't regained my focus and concentration who knows what the outcome could have been.

このcollect oneselfは： to make an effort to remain calm and think clearly and carefully about something to change the mood, regain control of oneself 「気を取り直す」、「気を落ち着かせる」とか「考えをまとめる」の意味になるようです。
