clinical depression

知人のイラストレータが漫画本を講談社から出したと聞いたのでちょっと紹介させてください。 本のタイトルは「わたしは働く うつ ウーマン」で、知人の友人、安部結貴さんの原作を漫画化したそうです。

By the way, I have just finished creating a manga book. Actually it belongs to a genre called "comic essay." It is based on a true story about a writer, Abe san, who's suffered from clinical depression for a long time. Not a very cheerful subject matter, but I tried to make it as light and comical as possible.
うつは英語で "depression" でいいと思っていましたが、どうやら "clinical depression" が正式な名称のようです。　辞書で "depression" を見ます。
・Dictionary.com: Psychiatry. a condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawal; sadness greater and more prolonged than that warranted by any objective reason. Compare clinical depression.: clinical depression: a depression so severe as to be considered abnormal, either because of no obvious environmental causes, or because the reaction to unfortunate life circumstances is more intense or prolonged than would generally be expected.

軽いうつなら "depression" でも良いが、ただの "depression" だと他にも意味があるので病気の場合は "clinical depression" が良いのでしょうね。
