At least 29 people, including 11 children and a pregnant woman, have died in a stampede at a Christian crusade in a densely populated area in the capital, Monrovia.

BBC DR Congo prisoners sentenced for raping inmates 20 Jan 2022 By Emery Makumeno

Ten male prisoners in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been found guilty of raping female inmates and trying to escape during a riot at a prison.

The court in the city of Lubumbashi ordered them to serve an additional 15 years in prison and to pay $50,000 (£37,000) in compensation to the 19 victims who took the case to court.

Although some were too frightened to give evidence, more than 30 women testified before a military prosecutor that they had been raped.

At least seven of the victims became pregnant and some contracted sexually transmitted infections - including HIV.

Ten prisoners have been found guilty of raping dozens of female inmates during a violent riot at an overcrowded jail in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Thirty-seven women and a teenage girl testified that they were repeatedly raped during a three-day riot at Kasapa Central Prison near Lubumbashi in 2020.

They set the women's section of the prison on fire with female detainees - including a 16-year-old girl - forced to sleep in a prison yard where they were subjected to sexual assaults.

Nearly 100 Rwandans who fled to an island in Lake Kivu in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo to avoid getting Covid jabs have been repatriated to their country.

Rwandans must be vaccinated to be allowed to use public transport, go to bars and restaurants or to attend public events.

BBC Thousands march to back Mali's military leaders 13 Jan 2022 By Lalla Sy

Thousands of Malians have taken to the streets of the capital, Bamako, to rally behind the president of the transition, Col Assimi Goita, and to demonstrate against the sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas).

The military government called for the population to mobilise throughout the country and in the diaspora, to prove the popularity of Col Assimi's regime.

The United Nations General Secretary, Antonio Guterres, asked Mali to present an acceptable electoral agenda on the eve of the protest.

He also promised that the sanctions would be progressively lifted once this is done by the Malian government.

BBC EU announces Mali sanctions over delayed polls 13 Jan 2022 By Will Ross

The European Union (EU) says it will impose sanctions on Mali after the military leaders who carried out last year's coup went back on a pledge to hold elections next month.

This follows a similar move by the Ecowas group of West African countries which on Sunday announced a trade embargo and border closures.

Announcing the decision to impose sanctions, the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said despite all the warnings to the Malian authorities there'd been no sign of progress.

He said the sanctions were also in response to the arrival of Russian private military contractors.

The EU says despite the sanctions it plans to keep soldiers in Mali.

 Ecowasも同様の動きをしていると。
