blight

私には "R" と "L" の区別は耳で聴いたのでは難しくてできないので（実はネイティブでも "R" と "L" 聞き違える事があると以前the pirates of Penzanceで書きました）、"DADDY-LONG-LEGS"　に出てきた：
Such a blight has fallen over my literary career.
の "blight" の意味はしっかりと知っている必要があります。　そこで辞書です。
Dictionary.com:
1. Plant Pathology. a. the rapid and extensive discoloration, wilting, and death of plant tissues.; b. a disease so characterized.
2. any cause of impairment, destruction, ruin, or frustration: Extravagance was the blight of the family.

名詞としてだけではなく動詞としての働きもします。

5. to destroy; ruin; frustrate: Illness blighted his hopes.

"bright" は陽ですが "blight" はその反対で陰ですね。
