MURDER at the Tokyo Lawn Tennis Clubの著者、Robert J. Collinsのもう一つの作品、Max Dangerを図書館に予約したのですが、一週間経っても入手できません。貸し出し中でも、他の予約者がいる訳ではないのに紛失中の様です。しかたがないので代わりにThe Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgeraldを読むことにしました。書名は聞いたことがあるのですが、内容は全く知りません。映画作品にもなった様なので、映画名として聞いた事があるのかも知りません。読み始めましたが、場所や人物の描写がやけに詳しく、文学作品が苦手の私としては手こずる気がします。
I looked at Miss Baker, wondering what it was she 'got done'. I enjoyed looking at her. She was a slender, small-breasted girl, with an errect carriage, which she accentuated by throwing her body backward at the shoulders like a young cadet.
"carriage" と言うと何か運ぶもの、昔なら馬車、現代ならタイプライターやプリンターの "carriage" や、そこから派生した "carriage return/CR" を直ぐに連想しますが、引用文の "carriage" は容姿と関係がありそうですが、辞書の説明を見ます。

なるほど "carriage" の動きがかもし出す雰囲気を表せるのですね。 ビートルズの歌の文句 "Something in the way she moves..." を思い出しました。
