土曜日は初めて車で東京を出たので（と言っても隣の千葉県ですが）ジョッギングをする時間がなくなりましたが日曜日は１5km程度走りました。　いつもよく走るコースで、家から南西に走ると荒川の土手に出れるので、それから南へ東京湾に向い、東京湾沿いの葛西臨海公園を西の端から東の端まで行くと今度は江戸川にぶつかるので、江戸川の土手をデズニーホテルを見ながら上流に走り、なぎさ公園のところから家の近くの清心町まで続く幾つもの公園と緑道を通るとても景色の良いコースです。　途中のフラワーガーデンにあるバラ園の近くで冬桜が２本満開に咲いていたのが印象的でした（もちろんバラも咲いていました）。　来週はもう少し距離を延ばして久しぶりに台場まで走ろうかな。

昨日の問題 "off book" の意味は "having one's lines memorised" です。

リーダーズダイジェスト9月号の単語クイズ、Word Powerはハリウッドの映画用語です。　映画はほとんど見ない事もあり、馴染みのない世界ですが単語としては興味を覚えるものが幾つもありました。 これから紹介する４つの単語も何とか覚えたいものです。最初の単語は "off book" です。　意味は次ぎのどれだか分かりますか？
A. out of sequence

kerwollops

赤毛のアンを読み終わりましたが辞書に載っていない単語が一つ残りました。
I'd a perfectly scrumptious time in the Academy today. Our French professor is simply a duck. His moustache would give you kerwollops of the heart.
この "kerwollops" はオンライン辞書、電子辞書のいづれにも載っていないので、趣味人倶楽部（http://smcb.jp/_mp00　無料会員制サイト）の「不明なエイゴ＆ステキなエイゴ」コミュニティの掲示版に助けを求めたところ、Pさんと言う方から、知り合いの英国人から次ぎの答えを得たと教えて頂きました。
To be 'kerwolloped' is to be hit - usually over the head, has since been shortened down to 'wolloped', therefore in this case it can be roughly translated asf (sic):
"Our French teacher is so handsome, his moustache makes my heart flutter"
なるほどとある程度納得しましたが、"wollop" もやはり辞書に載っていないのが気になったところ、"wallop" に "hit" の意味がある事が辞書で分かりました。

この10.b.の意味は赤毛のアンでの意味にピッタリだと思いませんか？
さて、次に "ker" についても辞書で調べると次ぎの事が分かりました。
・Dictionary.com: an unstressed syllable prefixed to onomatopoeic and other expressive words, usually forming adverbs or interjections: kerflop; kerplunk; ker-splosh. Also,ca-,ka-.
・Online Etymology Dictionary: ker- : 1836, U.S. slang prefix, possibly from infl. of Ger. or Du. ge-, pp. prefix; or ultimately echoic of the sound of the fall of some heavy body.
なるほど、"ker" は "hit" や "wallop" の様な音の出そうな言葉（擬音語？）の接頭辞なのですね。
そうすると、"kerwollop" が短縮されて "wollop" になったのではなく　"wallop/wollop" に　"ker" が付いたものと推測します。

with a catch in her voice

昨日は地元で朝から卓球の試合があり、一応決勝戦まで残ったので終わったのは夕方の６時過ぎになりました。　結果は残念ながら準優勝だったので来年も又初級者のレベルで再挑戦です。　卓球の試合は今年はこれで終わりですが今月の２９日にハーフマラソンのレースがあるのでこれから週末はジョッギングをする予定です。
さて、赤毛のアンももう直ぐ読み終わりそうです。　Marillaの眼が悪くなって、半年後には盲目になってしまうと聞いてアンはびっくり。

この "catch" の用法は初めて見ます。　辞書を見ます。

sport

AnneはAvonleaから離れた学校生活でホームシックにかかっています。　そこに現れたJosieの台詞です。
Ah, I guessed likely Marilla'd load you up with cake. That's why I called round. Otherwise I'd have gone to the park to hear the band play with Frank Stockley. He boards same place as I do, and he's a sport.
以前 "sport" の名詞用法で "(biology) an organism that has characteristics resulting from chromosomal alteration" の意味の例がありましたがここではもちろんそんな意味ではないでしょう。　スポーツマンの意味かなとも思いますが、何となくここでは "sport" に別の意味があるような気がします。　辞書を見ると色々な意味があります。

多分このf.の意味（A pleasant companion）で解釈するのが一番自然の気がします。

昨日はテニスのレッスンがあっただけで比較的忙しくない日だったのでブロッグ記事の整理をする時間が取れ、夕方は１５km程ジョッギングもしました。　今月の２９日に江東区のハーフマラソンがあるのでそれまでに今度は少なくとも５０～６０kmは練習したい。
