BBC Drought risk to England regions after dry February, scientists warn 16 Mar 2023 By Georgina Rannard

It might feel wet this week but experts are warning that parts of England need unseasonable rainfall to compensate for an abnormally dry winter.

Rivers in some of England and Wales ran their lowest on record for February, according to data from the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

England had its driest February for 30 years, according to the Met Office.

Rivers and reservoirs that supply drinking water and feed crops rely on winter rain to top up before spring.

Drought was declared in England and Wales last summer, leading to hosepipe bans, farmers losing crops and some wildlife dying.

Rain in February was also in short supply in Wales and Northern Ireland, with Wales seeing just 22% of its average for the month.

BBC Kenya freezes milk powder imports amid drought 9 Mar 2023

Kenya has imposed an indefinite ban on milk powder imports to cushion local processors and farmers from surplus production and low prices in anticipation of the long rains.

The rainy season is expected to improve fodder production and significantly boost local milk production - hence reducing the need for imports.

The Kenya Dairy Board said it would continue to monitor the production and demand dynamics of the commodity before lifting the ban.

BBC South Korea and Japan: A milestone meeting of frenemies 16 Mar 2023

South Korea and Japan's leaders have held talks in Tokyo in what has been hailed as a milestone in their fraught relationship. It comes just as North Korea fired a fourth round of missiles in a week - a reminder of why security is being prioritised over past disputes.

The leaders agreed to resume regular visits, and resolved a long-running trade dispute. Japan agreed to lift restrictions on exports of semi-conductor materials, while South Korea withdrew its complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

BBC correspondents examine the significance of the first such meeting between the countries since 2011.

 しかしまあ、トップの交流が途絶えて2011年以来2023年迄ですから、まあちょっとした仲の悪さですわねえ。

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol pulled off quite the coup to get this summit.

This is the first time a South Korean leader has been invited to Tokyo for such a meeting in 12 years.

 インド洋・太平洋をまたにかけた世界の中でなし得る役割をこそ見ようじゃないか―という韓国の方針は正しいものと思うが、それはあべっちが努力を費やしてきたところの枠組みではあるわな。

This also signals a fresh chapter for South Korea's place in the world. President Yoon wants to end what he sees as his country's tunnel-vision over North Korea. Instead he is looking outwards, across the Indo-Pacific, at the bigger role South Korea can play. An invitation by the Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to May's G7 summit in Hiroshima would be a mission accomplished.

South Korea's leader is holding a number of high-level talks on his much-anticipated visit. But Yoon Suk Yeol will also have one of his favourite dishes - "omurice", or fried rice topped with an omelette - according to local media.

BBC Zambian planes to rescue Malawians trapped after storm 17 Mar 2023

The Zambian government has provided two aircraft to help in rescue and distribution of relief aid to victims of Tropical Storm Freddy in Malawi.

Malawi Defence Force confirmed on Thursday the arrival of the planes.

The aircraft will be deployed to hard-to-reach southern areas in Mulanje, Phalombe and Nsanje where many people are feared trapped, deputy chief of military operations Col Lameck Kalenga said.

It was strong enough to be officially classified as a Tropical Storm for at least 36 days.

With hurricane-force winds, the storm also brought large storm surges as it kept re-energising over the warm waters of the Mozambique Channel.
