Playing Politics

レスリングがオリンピックから除外される可能性があると聞き、大変
びっくりしています。アメリカのラジオ（npr）で、トルコが日本以上
にショックを受けている様子がレポートされていました。さらに、
今回の件につき、次のような見方も紹介されていましたので、引用して
おきます。

The IOC is frequently accused of playing politics with the Olympics
and this decisionis no exception. Some sportswriters suggest that
dropping wrestling would be a bitter blow for two of the three cities
bidding to host the 2020 games, Istanbul and Tokyo, which has a
very strong women's team. The presumed beneficiary: Madrid,
which has closer ties to the modern pentathlon, which was thought
to be on the chopping block but survived.

IOCはたびたびオリンピックで私利を図って裏工作をすると非難
されているが、この決定も例外ではない。
スポーツライターの中には（次のように）ほのめかす人もいる。
レスリングを落とせば、2020年オリンピック招致をしようとして
いる３つの都市のうちの２つ、イスタンブールと（強い女子レス
リングチームを擁する）東京に痛烈な打撃となるだろう。推定
される受益者は、マドリードだ。（マドリードは）近代五種競技に
より密接なつながりがある。（近代五種競技は）切られる（まな板
の上にのせられている）と思われていたが、生き残ったのだ。
