BBC UK tightens rules on using Uighur-picked cotton 12 January 2021
「UK firms doing business in China will face fines if they can't show their products aren't linked to forced labour in the country's Xinjiang region.」
「Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab told MPs exports will be monitored to ensure goods are not being used in camps where Uighur are among minorities being held.
UK firms above a certain size must show they are trying to avoid using slavery in their supply chains.」
「But there is currently no penalty if they fail to do so.」
「Marks & Spencer sources its cotton through businesses that are accredited with the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), a not-for-profit organisation that focuses on sustainable production.
In March last year, BCI suspended its activities in Xinjiang, and as a result, there is no new licensed BCI cotton coming from the region.」
BBC M&S signs call to action over Uighur forced labour 6 January 2021
「Retailer Marks & Spencer has signed onto a call to action on human rights abuses in China's Xinjiang region.
In December, the BBC revealed new evidence that China is forcing hundreds of thousands of Uighurs and other minorities into hard, manual labour in the cotton fields of Xinjiang.」
「Xinjiang province accounts for roughly 20% of the world's cotton production.
Cotton production isn't the only human rights issue that has been documented in Xinjiang province.」
BBC UK business 'must wake up' to China's Uighur cotton slaves 16 December 2020
「The BBC approached 30 major international brands. Marks and Spencer, Next, and Tesco said they have policies in place that ensure products sourced from China do not use raw cotton from Xinjiang, while Burberry said they do not use any cotton from China at all.」
BBC China’s pressure and propaganda - the reality of reporting Xinjiang 15 January 2021, By John Sudworth
「In addition to the heavy restrictions it places on foreign journalists trying to report the truth about its far western region of Xinjiang, China has a new tactic: labelling independent coverage as "fake news".
At night, while travelling for hours along Xinjiang's desert highways, the unmarked cars that had been following us from the moment we arrived would tailgate us at speed, driving dangerously close with their headlights on full beam.」
「Their occupants - who never identified themselves - forced us to leave one city by chasing us out of restaurants and shops, ordering the owners not to serve us.」
BBC Will the UK really refuse trade deals over human rights? 119 January 2021, By Dharshini David
