First of all , I think the first role the United Nations should play is solution of disputes.Disputes between nations and between racial or ethic groups have never disappeared until now.Through UN's involvement,some were settled down ,although all were not settled down and some were expanded to wars.
The second role is removal of poverty.It is inevitable and general thing that there is a rich group and a poor group in a community at the same time.But the situation in which a specific group of people is extremely poor must be averted.That kind of situation may cause another kind of mishpas, both politically and economically.In reality, there are many people confined in the extreme poverty in the world ,especially in some developing countries.Although it is the matter of the country of the poverty itself , but in a broader sense, it is necessary for The United Nations takae initiatives to remove the situation.
The third role of UN Iwant to insist is its activities for preventing the globe from becoming warmer. At present, the U N is engaed in its activity. But it is insuficient. The Kyoto Protocol engagement is of course under U N's auspices.But it does not include the US and China, which both are most CO2-emitting countries.In taht sense, UN must make further efforts in this field.
As more than half a century has passed since its foundation, some controversial problems have surfaced. Then I think some necessary revision of organizationa framework should be implemented.
