Beat yourself:

ガリ勉を非難してはならない。がり勉とは遊びに興じたり、テレビを見たりという、目先の快楽を求めようとする自分自身に打ち勝つことだ。遊びたい気持ちを抑えて、懸命に勉強に励んだに違いない。そのような自分自身に打ち勝つ強さが、人生という長い旅路で成功するためには必要なのだ。
You should not criticize a nose-stuck-in-a-book student. Studying in a nose-stuck-in-a-book way means one beat oneself who wants to seek easy pleasures like having fun doing something or watching TV. He must have studied as hard as possible repressing what he wanted to do. Such strength to beat yourself is needed for you to get a success in your life-long journey.
