the floor

国際会議で使う英語の話を以前どこかで聞きましたが（多分"ESUJ" のEnglish Clubでだと思う）、そこで「発言権」の事を "the floor" と言うことを知りました。
例えばこんな使い方をするそうです。
I open the floor for discussion. （では議論に入ります）
Mr. X, you have the floor. （発言をどうぞ）
I will take the floor later. （あとで発言します）
The floor is open for comments. （ご意見のある方はどうぞ）
The floor is now closed. （議論を終了します）
"Agatha Christie, Murder in the Mews"　の中にこんな場面がありました。　
Then it was our turn, and a perfect babel of tongues was let loose. Finally the floor was left to Mrs. Robinson, a charming little bride who was there with her husband.
"the floor" はこの様に会議のような堅い場合だけではなく大勢で話している場合に話す順番が回ってきたような時にも使えることが分かりました。

going out

リーダーズダイジェスト４月号の"Life it's really like that"コーナーからの記事です。
I was driving around and around a parking garage in search of an available space. Nothing. Then I noticed a couple walking ahead of me.
"Going out?" I called to them.
"Just friends."
デートすることを "go out" とも言うことを聞いた事がありますが、当然デート以外の意味でも使うので上の記事のような紛らわしいことになるのですね。　ちなみにOneLook Quick Definitionsで "go out" を見ると次に示す六つの意味が載っていました。
・go out of fashion; become unfashionable
・become extinguished
・leave the house to go somewhere
・take the field
・date regularly; have a steady relationship with
・move out of or depart from
Well, I have to go out to the office now.

budget and warrant

"metrology"(http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/149573) の専門誌にあった文ですがその中の普通の単語（一般用語）の意味がいま一つ分かりません。 Although there was general consistency in the measurement results, the measurement uncertainties show less consistency. Twelve of the thirteen participants submitted uncertainty budgets, and all twelve budgets were different. The similarities and differences therefore warrant discussion. 文中の "budget" は予算では無いし、"warrant"　も保証するでも、逮捕するの意味でもないでしょう。 まず "budget" を辞書で引きます。 Dictionary.com: 1. an estimate, often itemized, of expected income and expense for a given period in the future., 2. a limited stock or supply of something: his budget of goodwill. American Herritage Dictionary: a quantity (as of energy or water) involved in, available for, or assignable to a particular situation ; also : an account of gains and losses of such a quantity budget "budget" と来るといつもお金の事が頭に浮かんだのですが必ずしもお金の事だけを指しているのではないのですね。 今度は次ぎの "warrant"　を調べます。 OneLook Quick Definitions: show to be reasonable or provide adequate ground for ("The emergency does not warrant all of us buying guns") Dictionary.com: to give reason or sanction for; justify: The circumstances warrant such measures. なるほど "warrant" が使われるのは当然でしたね。

all men are created equal

初めて栽培したジャガイモを掘って見たら見事にジャガイモができていました。昨年から始めた野菜作りですがジャガイモはやっと元が取れる程収穫がありました。野菜作りはイーモのですね。
さて、先日同じマンションに住んでいる方の葬儀に出席しました。 正直に言うと、亡くなった方の事は全く存じ上げないのですがマンションの理事長をやらされている関係での義理参加です。
"In Japan, all men are cremated equal."
日本では恐らく相当な確率で火葬が行われていると思いますが、 "In Japan, all men are created equal".はどうでしょうか。　憲法第一章を読む限りでは生まれつき特別な日本人が存在するのも確かです。

cold cash

気象庁がいつ梅雨宣言をしたのか気が付きませんでしたが東京は梅雨に入っているようです。　これからは "rainy day" が続くのでしょうね。 ところでまさかの場合 "rainy day" に備えて貯金をしなさいと言う事を昔はよく聞きましたが、最近はゼロ金利のせいか余り聞かなくなったし、第一貯金する余裕もほとんどない。 もし貯金しようと思って銀行に預けても利息はほとんど付きません。 でも実はお金を貯めて置く耳よりな場所があるのです。
"Why should you keep some money in your refrigerator?"
"So that you will always have some cold cash."
ちょっと寒くなりました？ "cold cash" を辞書で引きます。

日本語で懐が寒いと言うと "cold cash" が無い状態なので英語で何故この様な表現があるのか不思議ですね。

39 and holding

次ぎの文は確かリーダーズダイジェスト４月号の "Kids: As Kids See it" の記事にあったものです。
My young son was discussing a school health class with my mother, who coquettishly admits to being "39 and holding."
"Grandma," he asked, "have you been through your metamorphosis yet?"
文中の "39 and holding" の表現は最近の流行語「アラフォー」を連想させますがどうでしょうか？
辞書にはこのような用例は見つかりませんでしたがWebsiteには幾らでも用例があります。
・More Magazine always covers these topics but does so with grace and inspiration for the wonderful, beautiful, and confident 40-years-plus women, or the 39 and holding for the umpteenth (http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/91050 ) time woman.
・Sorry folks, I didn't ask her age, but she told me she was 39 and holding.
３０代や５０代の年齢
・ I suppose the film might appeal to those 29-and-holding guys out there who can relate to Braff's character, but it's not exactly the kind of film you're going to suggest to your buddies, is it?
・49 and holding... Yep, today I hit 49, and so now the countdown is on to the big five-0 next year.
アラフォーは３５～４５歳程度の女性を指すと聞きましたが、３５～４０歳前半の女性はアラフォーと言われるのは嬉しくなく、アラフォーを自称するのは４５歳以上の方ではないかと推測します。

leery

May 24のThe Japan Times Onlineにあった記事のタイトルです。

"leery" の単語を見るのは初めてではありません。　すくなくとも３－４回は辞書も引いているでしょう。　でも何故か覚えられない単語です。　今回は何とか覚えたいと思います。　そこで例文がある辞書を探してみます。
Dictionary.com:　wary; suspicious (usually fol. by of): I'm leery of his financial advice.
Webster's New World College Dictionary: cautious, doubting, uncertain; I don't know why I didn't do it earlier, but I suspect I was a little leery of the unknown.
Cambridge Advanced Learner's English Dictionary: not trusting of someone or something and tending to avoid them if possible; wary: I've always been a bit leery of authority figures.
これで "leery" を覚えられるかな？　I'm still a bit leery of my memory!

get the hang of

これもAgatha Christieの "Murder in the Mews" からの文章です。
Why a presumably sane young woman should want to fling an expensively-fitted dressing-case into a lake-d'you know, I worried all night because I couldn't get the hang of it.
この "get the hang of" と言う表現も明らかにイディオムで、ここでは "couldn't get the hang of it" で「理由が理解できない」と言うような意味だと推測は付きますが辞書で確認します。
American Herritage Dictionary: Learn the proper way of doing, using or handling something; acquire the knack of something. For example, I finally got the hang of this computer program.
Wiktionary: To learn to handle something with some skill, through practice or diligence, which can lead to an almost unconscious performance thereof. Driving feels awkward when you’re new to it, but it’s easy once you get the hang of it.
Cambridge Idiom Dictionary: to succeed in learning how to do something after practising it After three weeks of using this computer I think I've finally got the hang of it.
辞書の説明だといずれも「コツが分かる」と言う感じ意味ですが小説での意味は余り「コツ」とは関係はなさそうで、引用文と同じような使い方はないかその他の辞書も色々見ました。

一番簡便な辞書OneLook Quick Definitionsの例と説明 "a special way of doing something" が小説の用法と一番近いと思われます。

bag

リーダーズダイジェスト４月号の特集記事を紹介するページでFare Gameと題した特集を次ぎのように紹介しています。
How to take advantage of the financial crisis to bag yourself a great holiday
この "bag" の意味が分からないので辞書を引きます。
American Herritage Dictionary: Informal To gain possession of; capture.
Cambridge Advanced Learner's English Dictionary: to get something before other people have a chance to take it:　Bag us some decent seats/Bag some decent seats for us if you get there first, won't you?
Encarta World English Dictionary: obtain something: to take, catch, seize, or steal something, usually in an opportunistic way ( informal ): They've gotten hold of our mailing list and are using it to try to bag some of our customers.
"bag oneself" の例が辞書では見つからないのが気になりますが、単に何かを得ると言うより "usually in an opportunistic way" つまり、特集記事の場合 "financial crisis" を逆に利用しての意味が込められているようです。

play round

Agatha Christieの "Murder in the Mews" の中にあった面白い表現です。
Japp took out his pocket flashlight and let it play round the inside.
意味は辞書を引かなくても状況から判断した分かります。　むしろ辞書を引いてもこの様な用法を見つけるのは難しいような気がしますが一応辞書を見てみます。　案の定 "play" には意味が多過ぎる程ありましたが、上の例文と似たような用法・意味を見つけました。
OneLook Quick Definitions: 1. move or seem to move quickly, lightly, or irregularly ("The spotlights played on the politicians"), 2. manipulate manually or in one's mind or imagination ("She played nervously with her wedding ring")
Dictionary.com: 1. to cause to move or change lightly or quickly: to play colored lights on a fountain., 2.to operate or cause to operate, esp. continuously or with repeated action: to play a hose on a fire.
"play" はホースで火に水をかけるのにも使われるのですね。
この "play" の意味・用法は２年前に知った「カメラ、銃、ライトなどで対象を追うの意味で使う」 "train"(http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2007/04/1) と似ていますね。
