BBC Pakistan: Man accused of blasphemy killed by mob in Khanewal 13 Feb 2022
「A mob has killed a man for allegedly burning pages of the Koran in central Pakistan, police say, in the latest case of blasphemy-related violence in the country.
Police say more than 80 people have been arrested in connection with the killing on Saturday in the district of Khanewal in Punjab province.
Reports said the man was in police custody before a crowd snatched him.
His body was handed over to his family and a funeral held on Sunday.」
「Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said the case would be "dealt with the full severity of the law" and asked for a report on police officers accused of failing their duty to save the man.」
「Munawar Gujjar, chief of the police station in Tulamba, where the incident happened, added to the AP news agency the victim had been "mentally unstable for the last 15 years".」
「Pakistan's blasphemy laws carry a potential death sentence for anyone who insults Islam, but critics say they have been used to persecute minority faiths and unfairly target minorities.
The laws have been used to settle personal scores in cases which can appear to have little or nothing to do with religion, according to human rights groups.」
BBC Pakistan: Killing of Sri Lankan accused of blasphemy sparks protests 6 Dec 2021
「A brutal mob killing of a Sri Lankan man accused of blasphemy in Pakistan has sparked protests in both countries, with Pakistan's leader condemning the vigilante violence.
Priyantha Diyawadanage, 48, a factory manager in the city of Sialkot, was beaten to death on Friday and his body set alight.
More than 100 people have been arrested so far, said Pakistan PM Imran Khan.」
「"I saw that he was being attacked on the internet... it was so inhumane," she said.」
「Videos of the lynching proliferated across social media over the weekend, and showed scenes of the incensed crowd dragging Mr Diyawadanage from his workplace and beating him to death.
They then burnt his body, and several people in the crowd were seen taking selfies with his corpse.」
「The violence had begun after rumours spread that Mr Diyawadanage had allegedly committed a blasphemous action, in tearing down posters with the name of the Prophet Muhammad, local police chiefs said.
But a colleague, who rushed to the site in a bid to save him, told the Associated Press of Pakistan that Mr Diyawadanage had only removed the posters as the building was about to be cleaned.」
