反省と努力
Reflection and efforts:

ほとんどの人は心の大切さに気づかず、心を立派にしようなどということに関心を持たない。まずは、心を高めなければならない、心を美しくしなければならない、と思わなければならない。
Most people don't realize the importance of the mind, and don't get interested in improving their minds. But you should, first of all, think that you have to improve your minds, and make your minds beautiful.

そうしても、われわれは煩悩、欲にまみれた人間であるから、なかなかそうはなれない。なれないけれども、「ならなければならない」と思い、反省する。この反省があるから、また努力をしようと心がける。このことが人生にとっては大切なのである。
However, since we are humans with a lot of worldly desires and greed, it would not be so easy for us to become such existence. Hard as it is, we think we have to become so, and we have to reflect on ourselves. With such reflections, we could try to make efforts again. This process is crucial in our lives.

経営者の要件
Requirements for business leaders:

福沢諭吉は、経営者のあるべき姿を、こう表現しています。
Yukichi Fukuzawa explained about the ideal model of business leaders like the following.

思想の深遠なるは哲学者のごとく、心術の高尚正直なるは元禄武士のごとくにして、これに加うるに小俗吏の才をもってし、さらにこれに加うるに土百姓の身体をもってして、はじめて実業社会の大人たるべし
If you want to be a leader in the business world, you should be like a philosopher in terms of depth of thoughts, and like a samurai official in the age of the Genroku period in terms of nobleness of mind and honesty, as well as have versatile talents like people working behind the main stage and firm physical strength like farmers.

この言葉は、そのまま人生方程式に当てはまります。
These words could be directly applied to the life equation.

土百姓の身体、つまり、頑健な身体は、誰にも負けない努力をする「熱意」にあたり、小俗吏の持つ、放っておけば悪さをしかねない才能、経営で言うところの商才は「能力」にあたります。
Firm physical strength like farmers, or strong physique, matches "enthusiasm" with which you make more efforts than anybody else, and versatile talents like people working behind the main stage, which would work wrong if badly managed, match "capability," which could be also called practical abilities in the business world.

そして「考え方」にあたるのが、「思想の深遠なるは」「心術の高尚正直なるは」という部分です。
And what matches " thought" is the parts of " in terms of depth of thoughts" and " in terms of nobleness of mind and honesty."

つまり、哲学者が持つような素晴らしい思想を持ち、かつ元禄武士が身につけていたような素晴らしい心根を持ち、そのうえ小俗吏が発揮したような才能と、土百姓の頑健さを備えていなければ、立派な経営者にはなれないのです。
That means you could not be a great leader in the business world unless you have a wonderful thought like a philosopher, have a wonderful mind like a Genroku-period samurai official, and have a strong physique like a farmer.
