スタインベックの "Of MIce and Men" は解説サイトが多数あったので辞書の厄介に余りならずに読み終えてしまいました。
結果は私が嫌いな悲劇で終わりましたが、現実も悲劇が多いのでしかたないですね。
さて、The Japan Times Online, June 26の記事Fukushima tests seafood demand in local trial saleの中に知らない魚介類の名前を見かけました。
Fukushima tests seafood demand in local trial sale Octopus and whelks caught off Fukushima are showcased in a trial sale at stores in the city of Soma, becoming the first prefectural seafood marketed since the nuclear disaster erupted there last year.
記事には写真がありましたがタコしか写っていません。　"whelks" がどんな魚介類を指しているのか記事を読みましたが　"whelk" が再び出てきたのは次ぎの文だけです。
In Monday's sales, two kinds of octopus and one type of whelk hit store shelves. A supermarket in Soma sold them at a discount of about 40 percent off the usual market price.
"one type of whelk" とあるので、特定の生物の名称ではなく、種類を示している様です。　辞書を見ます。
・Cambridge English Dictionary: a soft sea animal, similar to a snail, that lives in a hard shell
・Oxford English Dictionary: a predatory marine mollusc with a heavy pointed spiral shell, some kinds of which are edible.
なるほど、なるほど日本ならサザエが　"whelk" の代表的な貝ですね。
