"Okinawa prefectural government could have taken its own measure toward the Senkaku issue!"
I don’t want to commit too much on Politics, but it seems to be easier to respond to the present affairs like China-Japan Confrontation at Senkaku islands Issue.
I’ve read an article by Dean Cheng about the issue, and his comment on this matter seems to be appropriate. He writes in The Heritage Foundation from the benefit of the US.
We can see the objective views and can not be too optimistic about the issue.
For the Chinese, the Diaoyutai are sort of record of Sino-Japanese relations, and for them, the islands were discovered by China and it belonged to them. Dean Cheng has never mentioned about Okinawa. Okinawa is nothing in terms of American interest. It is just part of Japan and what the US takes advantages for. That’s my impression.
Investigating a fishing vessel which trespassed the areas under Japan’s
administration seemed OK, so Dean writes, but under the pressure from Beijing
Government, the captain was released. Japan may repeat the same stance in the future.
In the comment of Dean Cheng, “Beijing will hopefully begin earnest participation in transparency and confidence-building measures rather than relying on unilateral demands imposed upon China’s neighbors,” was favorable. Transparency and Confidence -building phrases are nice, but we’ve seen what the US’s doing under those phrases, too.
Well, his suggestion to the US government was as it was that we had seen so far.
*America should stand by America’s Allies.
*America should express support, but do not dictate.
*America should not be coerced by Chinese irascibility.
And his conclusion is the same things will occur again in the future as China forces its territorial claims out to the first island chain.
Now looking the present situation in Okinawa, tourism has been affected a lot for
this incident as fisheries has. And I wondered why Okinawa prefectural government didn’t make sure that Ryukyu islands/Okinawa had been in a good relation in the past when it was the kingdom, and even if Okinawa is a part of Japan presently, Okinawa’s stance is quite different from Japanese government.
Directly Okinawa should have appealed to Chinese people that Okinawans are favor of Chinese, and we have nothing to do with the territorial problems. Just we have the right to make fisheries safely.
We hope peace and live in good hospitality forever! We are friends and we’ve been exploited by both Japan and the US, and we hope this political trauma has gone away.
As for the US bases, we Okinawans don’t want them. They were forced by both the US and Japan. We are your friends unlike Japanese government! So feel free to visit Okinawa! As well, make us visit your country anytime!
We are Okinawans not Japanese. (Or some say we are Okinawan Japanese) We were forced to be Japanese since 1879. Assimilation has been continued while Japan's been discriminating us forcing the huge US military bases.
Is it just my Utopia?
