BBC Niger coup: EU suspends security cooperation and budgetary aid 30 Jul 2023 By Marita Moloney & Tchima Illa Issoufou in Niamey
「The EU has suspended all security cooperation with Niger after the country's army took power in a coup.
It comes shortly after the US declared its "unflagging support" for ousted president Mohamed Bazoum - seen as a key Western ally in the fight against Islamist militants.」
「the US declared its "unflagging support" for ousted president Mohamed Bazoum」…
「EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell joined the US and France in refusing to recognise the coup leaders and said security cooperation and budgetary aid was being suspended indefinitely.」
BBC Niger coup: West African leaders threaten military intervention 31 Jul 2023 By Haruna Shehu Tangaza in Abuja & Farouk Chothia in London
「Leaders from Ecowas, the bloc of West African nations, held crisis talks in Nigeria's capital Abuja on Sunday to discuss the latest coup - which follows army takeovers in neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso.
A statement read out after the summit said that Ecowas had "zero tolerance" for coups.
The regional bloc would "take all measures necessary to restore constitutional order" if its demands were not met within a week.
"Such measures may include the use of force," and military chiefs are to meet "immediately" to plan for an intervention, the statement added.」
「In Mali, the junta has brought in Wagner to help it fight militant Islamists.
France announced the withdrawal of its troops last year amid growing hostility from the junta.
It subsequently moved its regional military headquarters to Niger.」
BBC Niger junta accuses France of military strike plan 31 Jul 2023
「Niger’s junta has accused former colonial ruler France of wanting to intervene militarily and reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.」
「The coup was widely condemned, including by France, the UN and West African regional body Ecowas.」
「Chad’s transitional President, Mahamat Idriss Deby, met and held talks with the Niger junta leader, as well as Mr Bazoum on Sunday.
The Chadian leader was on a mission to try to help resolve the political crisis in that country.」
BBC Bazoum in high spirits - Niger's PM 31 Jul 2023
「In an interview with a French television channel, Niger’s Prime Minister Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou has said there is no question that President Mohamed Bazoum would resign.
He is currently being held in detention by the military following a coup last week.
"This is a seizure of power by force. It is not a voluntary departure of the president so there is no reason to talk about this resignation issue," Mr Mahamadou said.」
「Mr Bazoum was pictured meeting Chad's leader, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, in Niger's capital, Niamey.
Mr Déby, who also met the coup leaders, is spearheading mediation efforts after West African leaders gave Niger's military seven days to give up power.」
