BBC Kenyan women claim sex abuse in British-owned tea farms 20 Feb 2023

More than 70 women working on two British-owned tea plantations in Kenya have told the BBC they were forced to have sex by their managers to retain their jobs.

Undercover filming by the BBC caught local bosses pressuring a female worker for sex.

The two firms, Unilever and James Finlay and Co, say these managers have now been suspended.

Unilever sold its tea operation in Kenya while the BBC was filming.

BBC Burkina Faso says French military operations over 20 Feb 2023 By Mary Harper

Burkina Faso has announced the official ending of the French military operation in the country aimed at defeating an intensifying Islamist insurgency.

The Burkinabe chief of general staff and the head of the French Sabre force attended what was described as a sombre flag lowering ceremony in a military barracks.

In January, Burkina Faso gave France a month to withdraw its 400 special forces.

Their presence has become increasingly unpopular with crowds waving Russian flags following a coup last year.

BBC UN official accuses Wagner Group of abuses in CAR 21 Feb 2023

An independent UN human rights expert has accused the Central African Republic's armed forces and their Russian allies from the Wagner Group of multiple rights abuses.

After a 10-day visit to the CAR, Yao Agbetse, who's Togolese, called on the government to investigate allegations of summary executions and disappearances levelled against the Russian mercenaries, particularly in Mambere-Kadei prefecture.

The group is reported to be exploiting gold reserves there.

BBC Mali junta expels UN mission's human rights chief 6 Feb 2023 By Cat Wiener

Mali's military government has given the head of the UN peacekeeping mission's human rights division 48 hours to leave the country.

In a statement read out on national television, a government spokesman said Guillaume Ngefa-Atondoko Andali had committed "subversive actions" in his selection of witnesses to testify at UN Security Council briefings on Mali.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is due in Mali on Monday for a visit aimed at boosting defence and security ties.

It will be the first official visit to the West African nation by a Russian foreign minister.

BBC Botswana loses a third of its rhinos in five years 21 Feb 2023 By Mark Pivac

Botswana says it has has seen a big jump in rhino poaching, losing about a third of its population of the endangered species.

Tourism Minister Philda Kereng told parliament that 138 rhinos were killed over the past five years, though numbers dropped sharply last year.

Official figures say just two animals were poached in the five years to 2017.

BBC Nigerian universities ordered to close ahead of poll 9 Feb 2023

The Nigerian National Universities Commission (NUC) has ordered the country's universities to close from 22 February to 14 March because of the general elections, which will be held on 25 February.

The decision follows concerns about the safety and security of staff and students during the poll.


There has been concern about whether the elections will be able to go ahead as planned on 25 February because of ongoing insecurity problems in the country.
