Many of the people who work very hard yet don't seem to get anywhere believe that the only thing they need is a break. Their motto begins the words "if only." "If only my boss would cut me some slack...If only I could get a promotion...If only I had some start-up capital... If only my kids would behave...then life would be prefect.
"cut me some slack" は慣用句の様です。"slack" はハワイ音楽の "slack guitar" あるいは "slack-key guitar" で知った単語で、"slack" で名詞、動詞、形容詞の用法・意味を持っていて、形容詞の意味は:
・not tense or taut ("Slack and wrinkled skin")
・lacking in rigor or strictness ("Slack in maintaining discipline")
・lacking in strength or firmness or resilience ("A slack grip")
などがあります。 "slack guitar" は特殊なギターではなく、弦を弛めて左手で弦を押さえなくても特定のコード(例えばCコード)になるようにチューニングしたものです。もっともチューニングによっては弦を締める場合もあるようです。"slack"の意味から "cut me some slack" は厳しくしない様な意味と想像できますが、辞書で調べます。
"cut someone some slack" or "give someone some slack":
・Wiktionary: (idiomatic) to be patient or lenient with somebody; to relax standards or expectations; Cut the new guy some slack. He's only been here for two days.
・American Heritage Dictionary: Slang To make an allowance for (someone), as in allowing more time to finish something.
・Cambridge Idiom Dictionary: to allow someone to do something that is not usually allowed, or to treat someone less severely than is usual; Officials have asked the Environmental Protection Agency to cut Utah some slack in enforcing the Clean Air Act.
幸い今の私の職場は "slack office" なので "If only my boss would cut me some slack. の願望をする必要はありません。
