"metrology"(http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/149573) 関係の専門用語はこのプログでは話題にしないつもりですが、仕事で知った英語で専門用語ではない一般用語は私としてはできれば全て覚えたいのでこのブログで紹介するのに適当な表現・単語が出てくれば良いなと思っています。　早速ですが実は最初の出勤日で読んだカタログにこんな表現がありました。
・Change Key parameters "on-the-fly" while the measurement is running
上の文にある "on-the-fly" は以前何かで見たことがありますが、ブログで取り上げてはいなかったようなので飛んで火にいる夏の虫（蝿/fly？）です。 "on-the-fly" をOneLookで検索しても何故か普通の英英辞書はリストされませんでしたが、Encyclopedia系の辞典が幾つかリストされました。　　
Wikipedia:
1. something that was not planned ahead
2. changes that are made during the execution of some activity: ex tempore, impromptu.
Example In reference to four-wheel drive vehicles, this term refers to the ability to change from two to four-wheel drive while the car is in gear and moving.
Computer Desktop Encyclopedia: Same as dynamic
同じ辞典で "dynamic" の項を見ると Refers to operations performed "on the fly," which are based on decisions made while the program is running rather than beforehand.
もしかして "on-the-fly" ではなくハイフンを使わない表現だと英英辞書でも掲載されているのではと調べて見るとありました。
Dictionary.com:
a. during flight; before falling to the ground: to catch a baseball on the fly.
b. hurriedly; without pausing: We had dinner on the fly.
Merriam-Webster:
1: in motion : busy
2: while still in the air : without the ball bouncing on the fly
3: in a hurry and often without preparation : hastily, spontaneously on the fly
4: simultaneously with another task on the fly
カタログでの意味はもちろん "changes that are made during the execution of some activity" で使われていると思います。　どうもこの表現は野球から発生し、それからコンピュータ関係、そしてその他の分野で使用されるようになったのではないかと推測します。

hawk

リーダーズダイジェスト３月号に掲載のジョークです。
"Read all about it!" yelled the newsboy, hawking his papers on the corner. "Fifty people swindled! Fifty people swindled!"
Curious, a businessman bought a paper.
"Hey," he said, "there's nothing in here about 50 people being swindled."
"Read all about it!" yelled the newsboy again, "Fifty-one people swindled."
賢い新聞売りの少年ですね。　"hawking" のこのような使い方は初めて見ますが状況からして歩きながら売っている意味であることの察しはつきます。　"hawk" にその様な意味があるか辞書で確認します。

Dictionary.com: to peddle or offer for sale by calling aloud in public.
行商で売り歩いたり、あるいは上のジョークの例のように声を出して売る場合に使われる事が分かりました。

metrology

３月末で前の会社との契約が切れ４月はずっと職探しをしていたのですが連休前に面接した会社に採用されることになり連休明けからまた仕事勤めを始めました。英語の本を読むまとまった時間は会社の昼休みの時間だったので会社勤めをしなかった期間は英語を読む、勉強する時間が減ったので、実はこのブログに書くネタのストックは枯渇寸前でした。これで何とかブログを余り休ず継続できそうです。
今度勤める会社は私を入れてもたった５人の計測機器を輸入販売する専門商社で、営業担当、技術担当、経理担当とタイピストのメンバーですがいずれも十数年前の会社設立以来のメンバーだそうです。この中に社長、役員がいるのかあるいは別にいるのかも不明（会社はホームページも持っていない）ですがいづれ分かるでしょう。
取り扱い製品も私にとって馴染みの薄いものなのでこれから色々と覚えなければいけない事がいっぱいありそうです。初日からやらされた仕事は営業担当の方が書いた日本語のメール原稿を英文にすることですが、私にはＰＣもないので鉛筆の手書きでの仕事です。そして鉛筆削りもないので十何年ぶりかで鉛筆をナイフで削りました。昼時と三時にはお茶もだされるので何ともレトロな会社です。
取り扱い製品のカタログに早速馴染みのない専門用語らしき単語がありました。
"manufactures and markets ultra-precise instruments for the fields of metrology and oceanography"
"oceanography" は海洋学と見当はつきますが "metrology" が何だか分かりません。
"metrology" を辞書で引きます。

この会社の扱い製品は国家検定機関、研究機関が使う計測器類と聞いているので "metrology" は日本語では計量学、度量衡（学）でしょうか。今後はこの "metrology" 関連の専門用語に悩まされそうです。

biopic

The Japan Times Online, May 8, 2009にあったHeadlineです。
Dubya biopic in need of conspiracy
"Dubya" がGeorge W. Bushを指すことは知っていますが、"biopic" が何か見当が付きません。　エコ関係が流行のこの頃なので、生物に関係する方の言葉を連想しますがどうも違うようです。　記事を読んでみます。　ヒントは次ぎの文にありました。
And yet, despite the fact that Stone's biopic ? simply titled "W." ? opened just before last year's presidential election in the States, response to it was muted, nothing like the Armageddon that greeted Michael Moore's similarly-timed "Fahrenheit 9/11" in 2004.
"W" についての映画、と言うことはGeorge W. Bushの伝記映画を意味するのですね。
一応確認の為に "biopic" を辞書で引きます。

American Herritage Dictionary: A film or television biography, often with fictionalized episodes.
テレビのドラマなら伝記映画ではなく伝記ＴＶドラマと言うのでしょうか？

hand-me-downs

リーダーズダイジェスト３月号にThe Story of your Lifeと題した自伝ではなく、Write a memoir、思い出を書こうという記事の中にあった "If The Boot Fits, Wear it" と題したa memoirのサンプルからの一節です。
I managed to get into my itchy wool snow pants. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn't fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes.
「お下がり」にあたる英語なんて知りませんでしたが、この文を読めば "hand-me-down" が「お下がり」の意味であることは辞書を引かずとも分かります。　でも一応辞書を引きます。

今の流行言葉で言うとリサイクル（品）とも言えますね。
長男なので子供の時の "hand-me-downs" の記憶はありませんが、今になって子供が着れなくなったズボンなどの "hand-me-downs" を使っています。

skin

The Japan Times Online, Saturday, May 2, 2009にあった記事のタイトルです。
Kusanagi skins by on indecency rap
裸になった事から "skin" の単語を使用したのでしょうが "skins by" とは何でしょう？　先を読んでみます。
Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, 34, of the popular music group SMAP, will not be charged with public indecency in connection with his April 23 arrest after being found naked and drunk in a central Tokyo park, prosecutors said Friday.
例の事件で何とか起訴を免れた云々の記事ですが、 "skins by" にそんな意味があるのか辞書を見ます。
American Herritage Dictionary: To pass with little room to spare: We barely skinned by.
Merriam-Webster: to pass or get by with scant room to spare
どうもスラングとしてこの様な意味があるようですが、オンライン辞書ではこの意味を載せていないの方が多かった。新聞記事や特にタイトルではしゃれと言うか連想を伴う単語を選ぶ傾向が顕著ですね。

Mystery shop

昨日触れたマーケティングテキスト "Kotler on Marketing" にあったもう一つの専門用語らしき表現は "mystery-shop" です。　テキストには次ぎのように書かれていました。
They benchmark the competitor's performance by talking to customers, resellers, suppliers, and consultants. They may mystery-shop a competitor's offering.
"mystery-shop" のハイフンは改行で挿入されたものか二語をつなぐために付けられたのかは不明ですが普通の辞書には何れも掲載されていませんでしたのでマーケティング用語のサイトを調べると "mystery shoppers" の項で次のような説明がありました。

Mystery Shopper:
Someone who is paid by a company to pose as a regular shopper in order to be exposed to the normal shopping experience in a company's stores and report back to the company on the quality of that experience. Obviously, to form an unbiased view of the normal shopping experience, the people working in the store should not be aware of the mystery shopper's identity or purpose.
Mystery shoppers are typically employed to test the shopping experience at the sponsor's stores, but they could also be used to analyze the shopping experience at competitors' stores.
・The Marketing Association of Australia and New Zealand
Mystery Shopper:
People employed to pose as consumers and shop at the competitors and their own stores to compare prices, displays, ect.
なるほど、覆面調査ですね。 Wiktionaryにはやはりもっと詳しい説明があることも分かりましたがそれは割愛します。

go/no-go, go-no-go, go or no-go

英語でマーケティングを勉強する会のBizComでは現在テキストとして "Kotler on Marketing" を使っております。
普段余り予習はしないのですが、前回は欠席したので前回までの分と今週読むはずの分先まで読んでいたら、マーケティング特有の専門用語らしき表現が二つありました。　一つは　"Go-NoGo" で次ぎのように使われていました。
These companies have routinized the process of innovation, with a Go-NoGo system which supports potential winners while cutting short the life of potential losers.
"Go-NoGo" のスペルでは辞書にはありませんでしたが "go/no-go", "go-no-go" と "go or no-go" が普通使われるスペルのようです。
Dictionary.com: being or relating to a decision as to whether or not to proceed as planned or to the time at which such a decision must be made.
Wiktionaryにもっと詳しい説明が次ぎのようにありました。
In general go/no go testing refers to a pass/fail test (or check) principle utilizing two boundary conditions. The test is passed only when both the Go condition is met and the No go condition fails.
The test gives no information as to the degree of conformance to, or deviation from the boundary conditions. These tests can be used for statistical process control purposes. There are specific SPC tools that utilize parameter based measurements (e.g., P-charts) for determining the stability of a process.
説明はまだ続き "SPC tools" とか "P-charts" など専門用語が更に出てきたのでこれ以上深追いはしないことにします。

Carnation

今日は母の日にちなんだジョークです。
"What is the national flower of the United States?"

まじめな話、 "Rose was officially adopted as the national flower of the United States in Nov.20, 1986."で
"Carnation"は米国オハイオ州の州花だそうです。

noughts and crosses

リーダーズダイジェスト３月号に掲載されていた "MAROONED ON DRAGON ISLAND" と題された記事の一節です。
The sky was blistering and there was no fresh water. Charlotte imagined fridge-loads of Sprite but it didn't help. She slumped in the shade of a rock and played noughts and crosses in the sand with Kathy.
題名にあるDRAGONは体長が２～３mにもなるコモドオオトカゲ（Komodo dragon）の事ですが、何だろうと思ったのは "played noughts and crosses" の方です。　文字通りに言うとマルバツゲームとなりますが、幼稚で直ぐ飽きる "tick-tack-toe/tic-tac-toe" とは違うゲームは何でしょう？　分からないので辞書を引きます。

なーんだ、"tic-tac-toe" を英国では "noughts and crosses" と言うのですね。
