Being positive with people prompts them to be positive with you --and individuals who interact well with others have a leg up on people who don't. I can't think of legitimate criticism of positive thinking. It's all good.
"leg up" は今年の７月３日に取り上げた慣用句で "1 an act of helping someone to mount a horse or high object. 2 a boost to improve one’s position."(COED)ような意味がある事をとりげましたが、上の文での意味はちょっとその意味ではないようなので "have a leg up on " で再度意味を調べます。

fight tooth and nail

Reader's Digest、7月号のThe Making of a Tragedyと題されたジャカルタでのテロによるホテル爆発事件の記事から引用します。
Jakarta's streets can be hard work; a menagerie of vehicles-decrepit buses spewing black smoke and motor bikes fighting tooth and nail for road space, and a heaving mass of people breathing it all in as they begin each new day.
"tooth and nail" の意味は文脈から想像は付きますが、まるで猫が喧嘩している様な面白い表現なので由来も分かるかどうか辞書を見ます。

cut someone slack

Bushidoを読み終えたので次に何を読もうと思っていたのですが、たまたま地元の図書館に置いてあった "TODAY MATTERS" by John C. Maxwellを読むことにしました。サブキャプションは "12 Daily Practices To Guarantee Tomorrow's Success" となっているので、小説ではなくいわゆるノウハウ物なので英語は簡単なはずです。実際読んで見ると小説なら青少年向けの物でも１ページに一つや二つ知らない単語があるものですが、６ページ目にやっと一つ次ぎの表現・単語にひっかかりました。
Many of the people who work very hard yet don't seem to get anywhere believe that the only thing they need is a break. Their motto begins the words "if only." "If only my boss would cut me some slack...If only I could get a promotion...If only I had some start-up capital... If only my kids would behave...then life would be prefect.
"cut me some slack" は慣用句の様です。"slack" はハワイ音楽の "slack guitar" あるいは "slack-key guitar" で知った単語で、"slack" で名詞、動詞、形容詞の用法・意味を持っていて、形容詞の意味は:
・not tense or taut ("Slack and wrinkled skin")
・lacking in rigor or strictness ("Slack in maintaining discipline")
・lacking in strength or firmness or resilience ("A slack grip")

"four fingers of death" は ""で囲まれているので "MRE" ほどは一般的な言葉ではないようですが、その後の文中に特に説明している個所はありません。　そこで、 "four fingers of death" をGoogleで検索したらWikipediaの "Meal, Ready-to-Eat" のページにredirectされ、その中に "four fingers of death" を説明している次ぎの文がありました。

なるほど、確かに想像はできますね。

"cagey" の意味が頭に浮かんできませんが記事を読みます。
Ichiro Ozawa, one of the most powerful figures in the Democratic Party of Japan, remains evasive on whether he will run against Prime Minister Naoto Kan in the DPJ presidential election, as more support pours in for Kan.
この先を読んでも、小沢氏が菅総理のやり方が気に入らないのは明々ですが、総裁選に出馬するのかしないのかははっきりせず、政治家同志の腹の探りあいをしている様子の記事でした。"cagey" はこのように態度がはっきりしない事と関係がありそうですが辞書の説明を見ます。

"cagey" の語源も知りたいと思いましたが、不明なようです。
いずれにせよ、都合の悪い事は秘書のせいにする政治家を私は好きになれませんし、いくら能力があっても腹黒い人は信用できません。

Wife Wanted

昨日は朝早くから卓球の試合に出かけたので英語の勉強日誌を休みました。　結果は三勝三敗でまあまあの成績でした。　今日は日曜日なので、やはり勉強日誌ではなく、気に入った英語ジョークを紹介します。
A man inserted an advertisement in the classifieds "Wife Wanted".
The next day, he received hundreds of replies, all reading the same thing: "You can have mine."
多分 "Husband Wanted" の広告を出したら、同じ様な反応があるでしょうね。

out-there

Reader's Digest、7月号の "Are You Normal or Nuts?"　と題された記事からの抜粋です。
For this year's installment of Normal or Nuts? we received a torrent of questions from readers who courageously described their various phobias, foibles, and out-there habits.
"out-there habits" とはどんな癖でしょうか？ "out-there" で辞書を見ます。

"pipeline" となると直ぐに原油のパイプラインを想像しますが北朝鮮系の学校の話なので違う意味のはずです。　ニュースの場合タイトルで分からない意味も記事の中身を読むと普通は分かるようになるので記事を読みます。　まず書き出しを引用します。
The education ministry will include pro-Pyongyang high schools in the government's tuition waiver program, sources said Wednesday.
補助金を出す出さないの話である事が分かります。　外国人学校、国際学校であっても日本の学校と同等であると母国あるいは国際機関が認める場合は補助金が支給されるとなっています。　しかし、北朝鮮と日本は国交が無いので日本の北朝鮮学校はその確認ができません。　記事の結論を引用します。
Education minister Tatsuo Kawabata has said he will reach a conclusion by the end of August. He said Wednesday the expert panel will discuss the matter "in a quiet environment" and its conclusion will be publicized.
つまり結論は８月末までお預けです。　となると "pipeline" の意味は "in pipeline" で考えた方が良さそうで、まだ検討中の意味のようですが、辞書で確認します。
いずれの辞書も "in pipeline" はありませんが "in the pipeline" が慣用句として意味が出ていました。

昨日取り上げた "zinger" についての引用文の最後にあった "checkout hogs" は同じRD７月号のPasseengers From Hellと題された記事の飛行機での旅行で遭遇する迷惑な人の例にあった次の "hog" と同じ意味でしょう。

豚には気の毒ですが、"hog" にはがめついとか利己主義の意味があるようです。
