"rank with ferns and junipers" で知っている単語は "fern" だけで（もちろん "rank" も知っていますがここでの意味には合わない）、"juniper" も何かの植物であることは多分間違いないでしょう。 この "rank" の使用法は初めてですが、文脈からすると恐らく「茂っている」ような意味ではないかと推測します。　
まず "juniper" を辞書で見ます。
