neatnik and slob

リーダーズダイジェスト６月号 Ask Auntyへ清潔好きの女性から交際している彼氏についての相談がありました。

Auntyの回答の出だしは次ぎのようになっていました。
Dear Neatnik,
You're neat; he's a slob. This setup has made for many happy unions. (I happen to know of slobs married to neatniks.)
"neatnik" は "a person who is extremely neat about surroundings, appearance, etc." で "slob" はその反対の性格の人間である事は容易に分かります。また "neatnik" は昔 "beatnik" （a member of the Beat Generation; a person who rejects or avoids conventional behavior, dress, etc. ）なる言葉が流行っていた事を思い出します。
"slob" も初めて見る単語ではないような気がしますが、この単語だけで出てきた場合には意味が直ぐ頭に浮かばないので辞書を引きます。

かえって難しい単語が出てきたのでもっと易しい説明を探します。

これで安心して納得できます。　問題は憶えられるかですが。

Junebell/twinflower

Matthewがアンを馬車に乗せてGreen Gablesに連れて行くのですが、アンのお喋りは心地よくなるほど続きます。　そして、また何かの花あるいは植物名が出てきます。　やはり気になるので調べます。

この "Junebells" は辞書にはありません。　植物のサイトを調べても "Junebells" は見あたりません。
しかしながら、 "Junebells" は "twinflower"（学名'the Linnea Borealis' ）を指している事が分かりました。

pick on my bones

"Anne of Green Gables" は人気のある作品と聞いていますが、評判どおり中々興味が湧くストーリーです。　しかしながら、馴染みのあるビジネスやテクニカルマニュアルの英語とは違って以外な個所で意味が分からず引っ掛かります。
I guess that's why I'm so thin-I am dreadful thin, ain't I? There isn't a pick on my bones. I do love to imagine I'm nice and plump, with dimples in my elbows.
この "pick on my bones" ですが、何でしょう？　最初は"have a bone to pick" (to have a disagreement to discuss with someone; to have something to argue about with someone.) とか、"pick on"(to harass or bother someone or something, usually unfairly. Please stop picking on me! I'm tired of it.) の様な慣用句の意味と関係あるのかもと思いましたが、文脈からして意味が合いません。　そこで "pick" の名詞の意味を辞書で丁寧に見たが分かりません。　仕方がなく "bones" を辞書で見ると、
Dictionary.com: a body: Let his bones rest in peace.
がありました。 "bones" はてっきり骨の事かと思っていたのですが、身体の事を意味するとなると、"pick" の解釈として次ぎの意味でつじつまが合うと思う。　
・American Herritage Dictionary: Something selected as the most desirable; the best or choicest part: the pick of the crop.
・Dictionary.com: the choicest or most desirable part, example, or examples: This horse is the pick of the stable.
つまり、アンは「自分（の身体）には良い所が何もない」と言うのが私の解釈です。

heels of your hands

"concentration dips"(http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/158112) を防ぐマッサージの最初の説明文に興味を引く単語がありました。
Make loose fists with both hands and gently beat all over your head using a drumming action. Make sure you use the flats of you fingers and heels of your hands - not knuckles.
"heel" は踵（かかと）の意味しかないと思っていたので手にも "heel" があるとは知りませんでした。
"heel" を辞書で見ます。
COED: the part of the palm of the hand next to the wrist.
Dictionary.com: the rear of the palm, adjacent to the wrist.
手のひらの手首に近い部分の事を指していますね。　しかしながら、今度はDictionary.comの最初の説明でrearが使われているのが気になります。 rear から裏を連想するからですが、このでのrearは
A hind partの意味で使われていて、そもそも裏とバックは普通は違いますね。　気になりついでに .palm も辞書で見ると、

She is a case.

"Anne of Green Gables" を読んでいます。　養子にする男の子をMatthewが駅に迎えにいったのに待っていたのは女の子。
"I'm not expecting a girl," said Matthew blankly. と言う台詞の前に、
"There was more scope for imagination, 'she said. She's a case, I should say."
と駅長が言う台詞の "case" が分からないので辞書を引きます。

wage war

今日は終戦記念日なので戦争に関係した名文句を３点紹介します。
・"When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die."
・Old soldiers never die; just young ones.
・No nukes is good nukes
いずれも世界中の政治家に聴かせたい言葉です。
最初の言葉は Jean-Paul Sartreが言ったそうですが、２番目はマッカーサーの有名な台詞をもじったもので、最後の台詞は最近どこかの政治家が似たような事を言い始めていますが、自国の核を棚に上げている間は聞く耳をもたない国には余り説得力はないようです。.

concentration dips

リーダーズダイジェスト６月号にMASSAGE FOR CONCENTRATION DIPSと題した記事がありました。　このDIPSの意味がよく分かりませんが、記事を読みます。
We all have "dips" in cncentration at one time or another during the work day. You may find that your attention starts to wander just before and after lunch, for example. Try this sequence to restore mental alertness and help you stay sharp.
"dips" が引用符で囲まれているところからして通常の "dips" とは意味・用法が異なる事を示しているのか、比喩あるいは強調を意味していると思われますが、文脈からすると集中力が「落ちる」事を意味しているようです。　辞書で "dip" を見ても a depression in an otherwise level surface ("There was a dip in the road"); a sudden sharp decrease in some quantity ("A dip in prices") の様な例があるだけです。仕方なく "concentration dips" をGoogleで検索すると1,120件の例があり、最初にリストされたのはリーダーズダイジェストの記事だったので参考にならないとしても次ぎの様な例が見つかりました。
・Concentration dips both before and after a nap.
・A psychologist from the University of Sussex has confirmed what we all knew: concentration dips in the early afternoon and part of the reason for this is lunch.
・It can help you to overcome energy and concentration dips during sports, study and life in general.
従って、"concentration dips" は集中力低下と解釈して間違えでは無いようです。

"ladies' eardrop" "jewelweed" "touch-me-not"

知っている語彙が少ないので文学作品はほとんど読まないのですが、少年少女向けの小説はこれまで何冊か読みました。　少女小説ですが大人も読んでいると聞いている（少なくとも日本では） "Anne of Green Gables"（赤毛のあん） を読むことにしました。 子供向けの小説とは言ってもいつも結構知らない単語があるものです。　 "Anne of Green Gables" も覚悟していた通り、と言うよりももっと厳しく、最初の文に早速知らない単語が二つも出てきました。
Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies' eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; ...
"alder" と "ladies' eardrops" ですが、植物の名前だろうとは "ladies' eardrops" の語感からも推測できます。　日本語でも知らない花や木などの植物は幾らでもあるので、調べなくても話は十分分かるのですが、 "ladies' eardrops" の名前が面白いので調べて見ました。

Fuchsia（フクシア）なら知っている花木ですが、フクシアは確か南米原産なので赤毛のアンの舞台のカナダに生えているのは変だと思いました。　散々調べたが "ladies' eardrops" をFuchsia以外の植物として英語で説明している辞書、サイトは見つかりませんでした。
諦めかけたところで、「薔薇のつぼみのお茶道具」と言うWebsite (http://www5c.biglobe.ne.jp/~rosebud/anne-jewelweed.htm)に「jewelweedも100年前にはladies' eardropと呼ばれていた」と言う説が出ていました。 jewelweedの和名はツリフネ草でホウセンカもツリフネソウの一種だそうで、別名が "touch-me-not" なのは分かり易いですね。
