putting in one's oar

アンの着る服は "serviceable" との描写が前にありましたが、それはMarillaがアンを躾ける、育てる事には口出しをしないと約束をしたMattewがアンに女の子らしい綺麗な服を買ってあげる為の伏線だった事が分かってきました。
But surely it would do no harm to let the child have one pretty dress--something like Diana Barry always wore. Mattew decided that he would give her one; that surely could not be objected to as an unwarranted putting in of his oar.
"oar" が櫂、オールの意味を持っている事は知っていますが、引用文の "putting in of his oar" は慣用句に違いありません。 辞書で調べます。
Dictionary.com: put in one's oar, to meddle; interfere: He put in his oar and was told to mind his own business.
American Herritage Dictionary: Interfere with something or insert one's opinion, as in I'll thank you not to put your oar in when we're discussing a private matter. This term, referring to helping to row a boat, was first recorded in Charles Coffey's 1731 play The Devil to Pay: "I will govern my own house without your putting in an oar."
日本語の諺「船頭多くして船山に登る」を連想しますが、意味は一寸違いますね。　干渉されれば結果が変になると言う意味では関係はありますが。

one-up

heard an older woman complain about her aches. But her friend one-upped her: "I woke up this morning and thought I was dead because nothing hurt."
上の文はRDの８月号にあったLife, It's really like that あったもので、文中の "one-upped" は初めて見る動詞で意味も大体想像が付く単語ですが、面白い表現なのでメモしました。　一応辞書で意味を確認します。
Dictionary.com: to get the better of; succeed in being a point, move, step, etc., ahead of (someone): They one-upped the competition.
Encarta: gain advantage over somebody: to gain an advantage over a rival or opponent ( informal ): Looks like I've been one-upped again.
American Herritage Dictionaryの説明を読むと "one up" 名詞用法が先にあったようです。
Having an advantage or lead over someone, as in Sara is one up on Jane because she passed algebra in summer school. This expression comes from sports, where it means to be one point ahead of one's opponents. It was transferred to more general use about 1920.
日本語の一枚上手を連想させる表現ですね。

draw

When some girls pose for an artist, the first thing he draws is the studio curtain.
芸術家は絵を描くだけではないのですね、 "draw" と来たので "uncover" を直ぐに想像したのは私の早とちり。
"draw": move or pull so as to cover or uncover something ("Draw the shades")

buffet

リーダーズダイジェスト8月号に掲載のThe Daniela Garcia Storyからです。
列車から落ち、意識はあるが両手両足に大怪我を負い全く動けなくなって線路脇に横たわっているDanielaの横を別の列車が通り過ぎる個所です。
Daniela felt the shaking and buffeting of wind as the train roared almost over her.
"buffeting" は動名詞で、列車が出てきますが列車のビュッフェと全く関係ないのは明らかです。　辞書を引くしかありません。

打ちつける様な風や波に使われるのですね。　この単語も名詞の "buffet" と同様フランス語由来で発音も同じでした。（カナカナで書くとバフェット cf. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/buffet?r=66）

daring

赤毛のアンは登場人物の性格も分かり易く描写されているので私のような文学音痴でも楽しめます。
Daring was the fashionable amusement among the Avonlea small fry just then.
（中略）
"Then I dare you to do it," said Jose flatly. "I dare you to climb up there and walk the ridgepole of Mr. Barry's kitchen roof."
アンはこの "Daring" と言う遊びに挑戦しますが、屋根から落ちて怪我をしました。　私が傑作だと思ったのは、アンの様子を見にアンが横たわっているベッドに来たMarillaに対しアンは饒舌に喋り、そこでMarillaが言った次ぎの台詞です。
"There's one thing plain to be seen, Anne," said Marilla, "and that is that your fall off the Barry roof hasn't injured your tongue at all."

grammar and glamour

"pilot" を "pirate" と乳母が聞き違いたために海賊にさせられた話、 "The pirates of Penzance" の事を大分前に話題にしましたが、 "r" と "l" の発音を耳で区別できない私としては "glamour" が "grammar" から生まれたと言う ArcaMax（メルマガ）の Sept.26 記事は興味があります。
以下にその記事を引用します。
Derived from the Latin "grammatica" and, ultimately, from the Greek word "gramma" (letter), "grammar" originally referred only to the study of language and literature. But during medieval times, it came to denote learning in general, including such occult subjects as magic and astrology.
These esoteric "dark arts" of grammar were considered to be mysterious and exciting. Soon alchemists and sorcerers had become the movie stars of medieval Europe, and "grammar" had come to mean "an alluring or fascinating attractiveness."
But how did "grammar" become "glamour"?
Like Boyle, "glamour" is a Scot. During the 1700s, the Scots replaced the "r" in "grammar" with an "l" to produce "glamer" or "glamour."
Eventually, "glamour" spread throughout English with its current meaning of "enchanting allure." Meanwhile, "grammar" withered to its original linguistic roots to mean "the study of the function and relationships of words in a sentence."
Now that "glamour" has been given a complete makeover and gained international celebrity, it's hard to believe that it once stood on the stage, dowdy and diffident, as the scholarly word "grammar." It dreamed a dream.

flick on the raw

昨日はいつもは電車で行く墓参りに自動車で行く予定だったのですが、家族の調子が悪いので予定を変えて、午前中は畑作業、主に春菊の間引きをしましたが結構時間がかかりしゃがんで作業をするので疲れました。　午後は地元の江戸川ウインドオーケストラの定期演奏会を聴きに行きました。　素人ながら（なので）年々上手になって来た気がします。　生まれ変わったらやって見たい事が幾つもありますが楽器の演奏もその一つです。　演奏会に行く度にそんな気がします。　演奏会から帰ったら再来週の１０kmレースに備えてジョッギングをしましたが、レース前のジョッギングはこれでたったの２度目、レース前のあと一回練習できるかどうかと言うところです。　夜はいつものように卓球の練習をしました。　今月は卓球の試合が２度あります。
さて、赤毛のアンです。　Mr. Phillips先生がいない間にはしゃいでいたのはアンだけではないのですが、アンはスケープゴートに選ばれました。
"Did you hear what I said, Anne?" queried Mr. Phillips sternly.
"Yes, sir," said Anne slowly, "but I didn't suppose you really meant it."
"I assure you I did," -- still the sarcastic inflection which all the children, and Anne especially, hated. It flicked on the raw. "Obey me at once."
まだ私は身に付いていませんが卓球のテクニックにフリックと言うのがあります。　そんな事を連想する様では上の会話の "flicked on the raw" の個所の意味は分かりません。　辞書を引きます。
"flicked on the raw" で慣用句の様な気がしますが、慣用句をオンライン辞書で探すのは結構難しく、慣用句としての　"flicked on the raw" 例は見つけられませんでした。 そこで "flick" の意味を辞書で調べると、

Dictionary.com: to strike lightly with a whip, the finger, etc.
と言う意味があります。　すると "raw" に "unnaturally or painfully exposed, as flesh, by removal of the skin or natural integument"; "painfully open, as a sore or wound" の意味があるので、この引用文での "flicked on the raw" は、「痛い所を突く」とか「傷口を叩く」ような感じですが、Mr. Phillipsの言葉での攻撃なので「心の傷口をグサリと刺す」としたら大げさでしょうか？
久しぶりに電子辞書も見てみても "flick on the raw" はありませんでしたが、"catch/touch someone on the raw" と言う慣用句があるのが分かりました。

catch/touch sb on the raw: BrE to upset sb by reminding them of sth they are particularly sensitive about
"flick on the raw" と同じですね。

prosthetist

リーダーズダイジェスト8月号にThe Daniela Garcia Storyと題された記事がありました。　女子医学生のDaniela Garciaは列車の連結から転落し両手両足切断と言う重傷を負いました。　しかしDaniela Garciaは復学し、２７歳で "the first quadrilateral amputee physician in the world" になったと言う信じられないような話です。
"quadrilateral amputee" は "quadriplegia" の最も重度の障害者と思いますがとにかく世の中には凄い人がいるものです。
Daniela Garciaはチリ人ですが、手術とリハビリは米国Philadelphiaの病院で受け、その時の医者と一緒の写真の説明に "prosthetist" があり、これは今年の６月１日に話題にした"prosthesis" の専門家の事だと思いますが辞書で確認します。
Dictionary.com: a person skilled in making or fitting prosthetic devices.
この記事にはその他にも取り上げたい単語がありましたがそれは別の機会に回します。

自動車を運転するようになったので交通標語にも注意が向くようになりました。

English Collection過去の投稿リスト No.601-No.700（http://kakabane.hp.infoseek.co.jp/EC_601-700.htm）を作成しました。 以前は投稿リストをワード作っていたのですが、リストもWebに載せる事を意識して、最近はエクセルで作成しているので、つい先日８００回目の投稿をしましたが、No.701-No.800のリストは日付にハイパーリンクを付ければできあがりなので作業は非常に楽になりました。

spoil

昨日金木犀（orange osmanthus）の花が咲いているのに気が付きました。　今朝久しぶりに区民農園に行って見たら、大根と小松菜の若芽が青虫、黒虫（本当の名称は知りません）にすっかり食べられ見るも無残な畑になっていました。　春菊とほうれん草は食べられていませんでしたので虫には好みがある事が良く分かります。　さて、赤毛のアンの一節です。
All the school girls and boys had one golden afternoon gathering them, coming home in the clear, echoing twilight with arms and baskets full of flowery spoil.
"spoil" で思い浮かべるのは "Spare the rod and spoil the child." とか "Too many cooks spoil the broth." の諺で、これらは動詞でネガティブなイメージですが、"flowery spoil" だと何か綺麗で大事そうな物に感じます。　そこで辞書を見ます。

Dictionary.com: prizes won or treasures accumulated: a child's spoils brought home from a party
やはり子供にとって大事な物のようですが、取得した方法が気になります。　Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionaryの説明に "something valuable or desirable gained through special effort or opportunism or in return for a favor ?usually used in plural" とありましたので、"spoil" は必ずしも略奪して得た物ではなくても良いので納得です。
