limp tonic

リーダーズダイジェスト8月号のDRINKING MADE EASYと題した記事からです。
Use tonic in cans. Limp tonic is the enemy of any good G&T or V&T and the culprit is usually a large plastic bottle of the stuff that's been sitting, half-empty, in the fridge. I buy boxfuls of 150ml cans so each drink is made with a freshly opened tonic.
"limp" と言われたら足を引き摺るとかびっこ（これは今はPC？）しか思い出せないので飲み物に使われるとは意外です。　早速辞書を見ます。
上の引用文にピッタリの用例は見あたりませんが、

と見ている内に上に引用した最後の説明 "spiritless prose" で魂にピンと来ました。（勿論大げさに書いています）　 "spiritless G&T or V&T"（そんなG&T and V&Tは無いと思いますが） を飲みたくないのと同様に、気の抜けたトニック、つまり "Limp tonic" は "G&T or V&T" に宜しくないのは当然ですね。
余談ですが、私はジントニックは余り好きではありませんがウォッカトニックは大好きで、国際線の飛行機に乗っている時や米国に行った時にウォッカトニックを飲む機会が多いのですが、"vodka tonic" の発音は難しいので注文する際に気合をいれて発音していました。　しかし "V&T" で通じるとなると若干ハードルが低くなる気がします。　今度試して見たい。

gingerly

Gilbertはアンに気があるようです。
Once, when nobody was looking, Gilbert took from his desk a little pink candy heart with a gold motto on it, "You are sweet," and slipped it under the curve of Anne's arm. Whereupon Anne arose, took the pink heart gingerly between the tips of her fingers, dropped it on the floor, ground it to powder beneath her heel, and resumed her position without deigning to bestow a glance on Gilbert.
この "gingerly" 今までに他の本でも何回も見かけ、従って何回も辞書で意味を確認した事は覚えていますが、どうも食べるジンジャーばかり頭に浮かんでしまう単語です。
OneLook Quick Definitions:　adverb: in a gingerly manner ("Gingerly I raised the edge of the blanket"); adjective: with extreme care or delicacy ("They proceeded with gingerly footwork over the jagged stones")
Dictionary.com: cautious, careful, or wary.
語源辞典を見ると：
1519, "elegantly, daintily," perhaps from O.Fr. gensor, comp. of gent "dainty, delicate," from L. gentius "(well)-born." Meaning "extremely cautiously" is from 1607.
とありました。　"gentle" と関係がある様だが、"gingerly" が出てきて "gentle" を思い浮かべられるようなら苦労はしないのですが。

andropause

先日の９月３０日は丁度４００年前に千葉県御宿沖でメキシコの船が難破し、３１７人の乗客が御宿の人々によって救助された日であり、メキシコと日本の友好が始まった日とされています。　夏休み明け最初のＡＳＪレクチャはそれを記念して、９月３０日にメキシコ大使館にて駐日メキシコ大使による "400 years of friendship: the arrival of Rodrigo de Vivero in Japan and its subsequent impact on Mexico-Japan relations." と題された内容でした。　予告は無かったのですが久しぶりに皇太子も出席され、もちろんＡＳＪのパトロンである高円宮妃も出席しレクチャーに対するお礼のスピーチをなさっていました。　講演後のレセプションはマリアッチの演奏サービスもあるなど贅沢な会合でした。　話は突然レベルが下がりますが、今日で私のEnglish Collectionへの投稿が丁度８００回目となりました。 取り上げている内容は９０％以上が英単語・慣用句なので、本来なら私の語彙はこの２年８ヶ月で７００以上は増えていなければならないのですが、残念ながら覚えているのはその内の半分程度のようです。　しかしながら、語彙が増えている事は確かなようなので、効率は余り良くないでしょうが今後もなんとか継続するつもりです。
さて今日の話題に移ります。　リーダーズダイジェスト8月号のSpecial Report: Men's Health, Midlife Crisisの一節です。
Some men might find it hard to admit that they are experiencing andropause, which hits men between 40 and 55 and causes significant changes in a man's mood, libido and energy level.
"andropause" これって男性版の更年期の事ですね。 更年期（menopause: the time in a woman's life in which the menstrual cycle ends） は女性専用と思っていたので意外です。　でも記事を読むと納得です。 "andropause" を一応辞書で確認します。
Dictionary.com:　the male counterpart of menopause, when the production of testosterone decreases and there are accompanying mental symptoms
そう言えば、自分の顔を鏡でよく見るとずいぶん老けた気がします。　いつのまにか " menopause" に入っていた、いやとっくに過ぎていたと言うのが正確でしょうね。

beat all

アンはピクニックにどうしても行きたい為に、マリラのアメジストを失くしたと嘘の告白をしました。　後に、マリラはそのアメジストを見つけ、アンに何故嘘をついたのか訊くと： "Why, you said you'd keep me here until I confessed," returned Anne wearily, "and so I decided to confess because I was bound to get to the picnic. I thought out a confession last night after I went to bed and made it as interesting as I could. And I said it over and over so that I wouldn't forget it. But you wouldn't let me go to the picnic after all, so all my trouble was wasted." Marilla had to laugh in spite for herself. But her conscience pricked her. "Anne, you do beat all! But I was wrong--I see that now...."
上の会話でMarillaが使った "beat" にはどんな意味があるのでしょう。 マイケル・ジャクソンの歌の "Beat it!" もそうですが "beat"は色々な意味があって特に会話で良く使われるので私の苦手な単語の一つです。
"beat" で意味を調べると次ぎの意味が上の場面にもあてはまりそうです。
Dictionary.com: to produce (an attitude, idea, habit, etc.) by repeated efforts: I'll beat some sense into him.
Slang. to swindle; cheat (often fol. by out): He beat him out of hundreds of dollars on that deal.
しかし、ちょっと前に"tack on" を "tack" で調べて解釈を間違えたばかりですが、上の会話を良く見ると "beat all" とあり、辞書には慣用句として "beat all" の説明がありました。
・American Herritage Dictionary: To be impressive or amazing. Often used in negative conditional constructions: If that doesn't beat all!
・Dictionary.com: Informal. to surpass anything of a similar nature, esp. in an astonishing or outrageous way: The way he came in here and ordered us around beats all!
・The American HeritageR Dictionary of Idioms: Surpass anything, especially in a strange or amazing way, as in Adam and his cousin Eve eloped--doesn't that beat all! This phrase appears to have replaced beat the Dutch. It is often used in a negative construction, as in the example.
アンは嘘をついたので "cheat" と解釈をしても誤りではないようですが、やはり "beat all"の慣用句で "To be impressive or amazing."として解釈する方が正しいのでしょうね。

Everyone drives in the middle of the road

十何年振りかで車に乗り始めたせいか、リーダーズダイジェスト６月号のLife It's really like that. コーナーのこんな投書が気になりました。
Visiting my in-laws is a heart-stopping experience if only because my brother-in-law drives in the middle of the road, straddling the double yellow lines that separate traffic.
My sister-in-law does little to ease my fears. Seeing the horror in my eyes, she once said, "Don't worry. Everyone around here drives in the middle of the road."
「赤信号、皆で渡れば怖くない」と言うのを聞いたことがありますが、これは「赤信号、皆で破れば恐ろしい」が正しい解釈ですね。　私の運転も左側に自転車が走っている時は道の真ん中どころか反対車線を走っています。　

tough row to hoe

リーダーズダイジェスト8月号の "The trouble with Celebrity Science" と題された記事からです。
"Clearly, if you're talking about public health, defending mercury in vaccines is a tough row to hoe.
区民農園で野菜作りをしている程度なので "tough row to hoe" を実感している訳ではありませんがこの表現は農作業から生まれた慣用句に違いありません。
・McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs: a difficult task to carry out; a heavy set of burdens. It's a tough row to hoe, but hoe it you will. This is not an easy task. This is a hard row to hoe.
・Cambridge Dictionary of American Idioms: a difficult situation to deal with The author said that he knew it would be a tough row to hoe when he began research for this book.
区民農園は猫の額のような畑なので耕すのは簡単ですが、キャベツやブロッコリー、 "cruciferous vegetable" を栽培する場合の青虫退治は本当に "tough row to hoe" です。

rub it in

最初はアンを引き取る事を渋っていたMarillaは気持ちに変化があったことをMatthewに告白(own up)しました
"...I can't imagine the place without her. Now, don't be looking I-told-you-so, Mattew. That's bad enough in a woman, but it isn't to be edured in a man. I'm perfectly willing to own up that I'm glad I consented to keep the child and that I'm getting fond of her, but don't you rub it in, Matthew Cuthbert."
"I-told-you-so" と言う表現は面白いですね。　"rub it in" はこの "I-told-you-so" の態度の事を示している様ですがどうでしょう。　連語や慣用句を辞書で調べるのは厄介な場合が多いのですが、"rub it in" は慣用句として次ぎの説明がありました。
・Dictionary.com: Informal. to emphasize or reiterate something unpleasant in order to tease or annoy: The situation was embarrassing enough without having you rub it in.
・Wiktionary: To add insult to injury; to emphasize one's strengths or another's weaknesses in a manner that degrades another.; I know you're a better painter than I am, but you don't have to rub it in.
・Cambridge Idioms Dictionary: if someone rubs it in, they keep talking about something that makes you feel embarrassed or upset I know I made a mistake, but you don't have to rub it in.
塩を傷口にすり込むことを想像すればこの慣用句 "rub it in" は覚えられそうです。

sun-kissed

リーダーズダイジェスト8月号の "Kindness of Strangers" と題された特集記事の一つ、ある外国人がタイを旅行した時の経験談の一部です。
Her face was well wrinkled and sun-kissed. She looked quite beautiful but very ill. As a reflex, I reached into my pocket to find some money. Tentatively, I pushed it into her hand. It was enough money for her to survive for a few months. I felt like the "kind stranger".
Without a common language, she looked at me with the wisdom and pity that could burn into a soul. She weakly pushed back the money. I was left shocked.
"sun-kissed" は日焼けの事だと思いますが辞書で確認します。

Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary: MAINLY HUMOROUS, describes a place that receives a lot of sun, or a person whose appearance is attractive because they have recently been in the sun
最近では、紫外線が皮膚ガンを引き起こすので日焼けはなるべく避けたほうが良いとされていますので "sun-kissed" なんて悠長な言葉は聞けなくなるかも。
