BBC US resumes food aid to refugees in Ethiopia 6 Oct 2023 By Kalkidan Yibeltal

The US has announced it’s resuming delivery of food aid for refugees in Ethiopia after a five-month hiatus.

This comes after the authorities in Addis Ababa agreed to step away from distributing the supplies.

Washington suspended aid in May - following a similar move by the UN - saying it had found “widespread and coordinated” theft of food aid.

 エチオピア自体、内戦の影響で国内避難民が発生するような国ですが。それでも周囲の国に比べれば安定しているとはいえ、避難民を多く預かっている地域のハブになる国ではある。そうした難民たちには援助が必要なのだ。

Hundreds of thousands of refugees currently residing in Ethiopia - mostly from neighbouring countries like Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea - will benefit from the resumption of aid.

However food aid for around 20 million Ethiopians currently in desperate need of humanitarian support remains paused.

BBC Ethiopia's Tigray crisis: Deaths from starvation after aid halted - official 18 Aug 2023 By Girmay Gebru in Mekelle & Mercy Juma in Nairobi

At least 1,400 people have starved to death in Ethiopia's northern Tigray since food aid was suspended because it was being stolen, an official has said.

The UN's World Food Programme (WFP) and the US's leading aid agency halted food aid to Tigray about four months ago.

A subsequent investigation by Tigrayan authorities found that almost 500 people were involved in the theft, the official told the BBC.

AU envoy, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, said around 600,000 people died in the two-year conflict. Researchers put the hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths down to fighting, starvation and lack of health care.

The BBC saw eight-year-old Rahel Tewelde, with ribs exposed, at the hospital. She weighed only 10kg (22lb), the weight of an average one-year-old.

BBC Halted aid starved hundreds in Ethiopia's Tigray region - spokesman 18 Aug 2023 By Girmay Gebru & Mercy Juma

A senior official in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region has told the BBC that at least 1,400 people have starved to death since international food aid was suspended.

Gebrehiwet Gebrezgabher said the number of dead could be much higher.

Tigray was hit by acute food shortages when a brutal conflict broke out in 2020 between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front. Six million people were affected.
