レバノン：抗議行動は二日目

　経済危機に陥っていたレバノン。しばらくはコロナウィルス・ロックダウンでデモも、まあ、その、落ち着いていたところ、このほど再燃。貨幣価値が激烈に下がって、二進も三進も行かなくなってきたみたい。

「Protesters took to the streets for the second consecutive night over the country's economic crisis」

　10月以来、70％も価値が下落したとのこと。それがどれだけのことかは、ちょっと想像つかないが、ものっそ単純にモノの値段が70％増しと考えても―なかなかたまったものではない。

「The Lebanese pound has fallen to record lows, having lost 70% of its value since October when protests began.」

　貨幣価値の話でフリーフォールなんてのも、なかなか見ない名詞だ。

「The pound's decline appeared to halt on Friday after the government announced that the central bank would begin injecting more US dollars into the market in a bid to stop the pound's freefall.」

　1/3が失業者―というのも大変なもので。

「Many Lebanese citizens who rely on hard currency savings have fallen into poverty due to capital controls, as banks restrict dollar withdrawals. More than a third of the population is unemployed.」

　1975年以来の大騒ぎ―という。ところでIMFとお話しているそうですが

「The Lebanese government is in talks with the International Monetary Fund, but any bailout is expected to involve painful economic reforms, in a country built on a sectarian political system that is likely to face stiff resistance from the entrenched parties.」

　大口支援国（仮）が「そういえば最近、お宅さんには多額の財産を抱えて『帰国』なさったVIPがいはりますなあ？」とか言ってこないかな。いえまあ、我が国としては、戦後の困難な時期を長くIMFに支援していただいた義理もあるわけで、積極的にIMFに協力していくべき道義的文脈にあると思うんですが。
