the odd drink

昨日は37.9度の熱が出て仕事に身が入らず早く5時にならないかと時計ばかり気にしていました。今日は熱は下がりましたがまだ喉が痛いので医者に行こうかまよっています。そんな訳で、ＲＤにあったLaughter, The Best Medicineにあった医者のジョークを紹介します。
A man walks into a bar and orders six whiskeys. Putting them in a row, he downs the first glass, then the third and finally, the fifth.
"Excuse me," the bartender says as the man turns to leave. "You left three glasses untouched."
"I know," the man says. "My doctor says it's OK to have the odd drink."
この人は私と同じで "odd" の使用法を "odd number" しか知らなかったのでしょうか？ "odd" を電子辞書のロングマンで見ると色々と意味のある多義語である事が分かりますが、3番目に次ぎの説明がありました。
the odd moment/person/drink ect. a few moments, people etc. that happen or appear at various times, but not often and not regularly
つまり医者が言わんとしたのは「たまになら」だったのですね。
