週末に近所で木立朝鮮朝顔（Angel's Trumpet）の花が咲いているのを見かけましたし、今朝は出勤途中でアジサイ（Hydrangea）が咲き始めたのに気が付きました。会社や家にいるのはもったいない季節ですね。
さて、English Journal 5月号にあった連載対談 Talking Japan からの抜粋です。
So part of this idea of mothers not being at the child's beck and call 24 hours a day is, I think in America, probably an attempt to instill a sense of independence in the child from a very young age: possibly too young.
"beck and call" の個所は「言いなりになる」と訳されていましたが、慣用語か何かだろうと思い辞書を引くと、"at someone's beck and call" で：(Dictionary.com）ready to do someone's bidding; subject to someone's slightest wish: He has three servants at his beck and call.
とありました。憶えておきたい表現です。
