新聞をあまり読んでいないので、昨日スミンキ先生の奥さんに久しぶりにお会いして知りました。彼女は中国現代文学で博士論文を書いているのですが、その中で目取真さんの作品との比較研究をされるとのことでした。中国語で書かれる博論ですから、彼女の論文を通してより深い理解が中国の方々に拡大されたらいいですね。期待しています。↓以下は転載です。『眼の奥の森』の題名がとてもいいので、”In the Woods of Memory”は”Woods in the Deep Eyes”の直訳を考えてしまうのですがー。安くて購入できるのですね。翻訳はウチナーグチの部分がどう翻訳されているかが、気になります。特にＳｅｉｊｉの独白です！
芥川賞作家の目取真俊さんの長編小説「眼（め）の奥の森」（影書房、２００９年）が６月１３日にペーパーバックの英訳単行本として米国で出版される。英語タイトルは「Ｉｎ ｔｈｅ Ｗｏｏｄｓ ｏｆ Ｍｅｍｏｒｙ（イン・ザ・ウッズ・オブ・メモリー）」。沖縄国際大学の素民喜（すみんき）琢磨教授が翻訳した。沖縄文学で長編の英訳単行本化は初めて。
「眼の奥の森」は２００４年から０７年まで季刊「前夜」に連載され、沖縄戦末期の本島北部で、４人の米兵に少女が襲われる事件を発端として、少女のあだを討とうと米兵を狙う若者や加害米兵ら１０人の視点で物語が展開し、現代に至る悲しみの連鎖を描く。言語的な実験も試みており、目取真文学の最高傑作と評されている。
沖縄文学の英訳は、１９８９年に大城立裕さんの「カクテル・パーティー」と東峰夫さんの「オキナワの少年」を１冊にして出版された。近年、ハワイ大学出版で複数のアンソロジーが企画され、短編小説や詩が収録されている。
米国生まれの素民喜教授は２００４年に沖縄国際大に赴任以来、沖縄文学の翻訳を手掛けてきた。
