深夜に偶然サム・シェパード（Sam Shepard)主演のAfter the Harvestを見た！1920年代のカナダの農家を中心に描かれた小説 Wild Geeseを映像化したものである。英語字幕はないが、中味を理解するのは難しくない。封建的・家父長の力で貫かれた田舎（草原地域）と近代化された都会の差異が背後に秘められている。

家父長のサム・シェパード（Caleb Gare役）の渋い役柄を堪能した。「埋められた子供」（The Buried Child）のサム・シェパードの舞台を19８0年代の大学の実験劇場で見た。「パリス・テキサス」なども含め、関心をもっていたが、久しぶりに俳優としての映画に遭遇してびっくりしつつ見た。とてもいい演技をしている！
土地を所有することにあくなき執着を持つCaleb Gareは家父長として家族を農地に縛りつけ自らの意志に縛りつけている。村の校区に教員としてやってきた女性の登場がドミナントなGareの支配する農地と家族崩壊の始まりだった。
支配と服従、家族の根源をなす父と母の婚姻の背景が物語の影になっている。PDFで90頁の小説の分析がネットで読める。映像では描かれていないが、主人公のCaleb Gareが最後は自ら沼地で溺れ死ぬことになっている。映像では火事で総てを失う映像で終わる。貪欲に近隣の農夫を痛めつけたり土地を奪ってきたことに対する報いとも取れる。

映画を観ていてハットしたのは、支配される身体の機械的な動きとおびえる身体である。支配する身体と支配される身体の様態の異様さがある。のびやかさがなく、抑圧される身体と精神・心理作用がある。ぎこちなく常に警戒しながら呼吸する身体のありかがある。精神と一対になった身体の動きに注目せざるを得ない。

In the 1920s, a young woman comes to the Canadian prairies as a schoolteacher and enters the lives of a dysfunctional farming family, ruled over by a controlling and cruel patriarch. Caleb Gare is the wealthiest farmer in the district who is obsessed with acquiring land. In spite of his wealth, he keeps his wife and their children in near poverty. Caleb tyrannically treats his family like slaves, forcing them to live a harsh life. The only person capable of standing up to Caleb is his long-suffering wife, who has long been cowed into quiet desperation. When the enigmatic new schoolteacher comes to live with them, Caleb finds the stranglehold he's always had on his family coming to an abrupt yet certain end. |
