13 December 2016 – Fernando Alonso has insisted that his "only goal" is to claim the World Championship with McLaren-Honda, following speculation linking him to the vacancy at Mercedes.

Nico Rosberg's shock retirement freed up a seat alongside Lewis Hamilton for the 2017 season and Alonso, among other names, was immediately mooted as a candidate.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff admitted that his team "had to consider" the two-time World Champion, though remained wary of his contract, which was emphasised by McLaren.

Alonso addressed staff at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking on Tuesday and, in the wake of the reports, reiterated his commitment to the outfit moving forward.

"I believe in this project, I'm committed, and I want to be World Champion with McLaren-Honda – that's my only goal," said Alonso, quoted on McLaren's social media channels.

Alonso is set to enter the final year of his McLaren contract.
