「Brazil's Amazon rainforest has seen a record number of fires this year, according to new data from the country's space research agency.」
「The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) said its satellite data showed an 83% increase on the same period in 2018.」
ボルソナーロが，森林破壊のペースの速さを偽って過大に主張したとの廉で宇宙局の局長を首にしたばかりである。しかし，そういうデータ無視の態度がどれほど現実を糊塗できるかといえば―
「Smoke from the fires caused a blackout in the city of Sao Paulo on Monday.」
サンパウロが煙に覆われてしまうくらいに現実は非情である。
「The daytime blackout, which lasted for about an hour, came after strong winds brought in smoke from forest fires burning in the states of Amazonas and Rondonia, more than 2,700km (1,700 miles) away.」
ま，風向きの都合で1時間ほどのもんだよ，ガハハハハ！と言おうとしてもですな，そもそもそんなことが起こることだけで大問題ですな。とにかくまあ，この手の人たちはデータを無視するから…この点にかけては，カネ目の話なら通じるトランプの方がマシだ。
「Conservationists have blamed Mr Bolsonaro, saying he has encouraged loggers and farmers to clear the land.」
まーその，全世界の環境を懸念して，ブラジルの農家が「ちょっくら」農地を広げるのを禁じるよーなのはどーよ，という，それこそ市民的感情も尤もであり，だからこそボルソナーロが勝利できるわけでもあろう，とは分るのだが。
「Wildfires often occur in the dry season in Brazil but they are also deliberately started in efforts to illegally deforest land for cattle ranching.」
とまあ，あんまり私的に森林破壊するのはお勧めしない，できない。焼畑農民が，ついうっかり焼き過ぎてしまう―くらいなら，まあ，そうまで悪くない（規模にもよるが）。問題なのは，あらかじめ産業利用の目的をもって意図的に産業規模の森林を野放図なまでに破壊するところ。回復不能の大ダメージになりかねない。
…cattle ranchingというのを，牧歌的に数頭～十数頭の家畜を「アルプスの少女ハイジ」的に飼うという意味に理解できるなら，まあ，「自然と調和した農業」ってなもんで，さほど悪かあないでしょうけどね。
発生件数から見ると，1月から8月まで7万2千件も火災があったという。そりゃすごい。
「Inpe said it had detected more than 72,000 fires between January and August - the highest number since records began in 2013.」
木曜以来，9500件ほど探知したという。「It said it had observed more than 9,500 forest fires since Thursday, mostly in the Amazon region.」
ボルソナーロは”いや，例年の，農家が農地を焼く火だろ？”とするようだが，”そーゆーペースじゃねえよ”と突っ込みがはいる：「Inpe, however, noted that the number of fires was not in line with those normally reported during the dry season.」。
そんなわけで、地味に大事件なのである。
