Unnatural classes in morphological change

In this note I question a long-standing truism of Russian historical morphology, attempting to account for its persistence. The facts are these: the default endings of the genitive plural of 1st declension masculine nouns, -ов and -ей, come originally from the u-stems and i-stems, ...

Salvage and Salvation: Guest Editors' Introduction. Asian Ethnology Vol. 75 (2016), 1-28.

What does it mean to offer salvation in the midst of disaster? This is the question that animates the articles in this special issue, all of which probe the complex dynamics at play in the intersections of religion and disaster relief in contemporary Asia. 7 NAGAI KAFŪ'S FEMINIST PERSPECTIVE

This paper examines four of Nagai Kafu's works, each featuring a strong female character, to analyze how the author's perspective on women in society developed over time. The next two stories examined are 'May Darkness' (from 'Night Tales of Shinbashi') and 'During the Rains', both of which are set in Japan. Here, the women are...

Hard Lessons Learned: Tracking Changes in Media Presentations of Religion and Religious Aid Mobilization after the 1995 and 2011 Disasters in Japan. Asian Ethnology Vol. 75 (2016), 105-137.

When religious organizations of all types mobilized relief efforts in the wake of the 17 January 1995 Great Hanshin/Awaji earthquake in western Japan, their contributions failed to translate into favorable media coverage. By contrast, religious aid responses after the 11 March 2011 Great East Japan earthquake disasters attracted a largely positive mainstream media response. This article surveys Japan’s major daily newspapers, popular books, academic reports, and other published treatments of religious responses to these two major disasters to assess a shift in recent post-disaster...

A case for greater interdisciplinary collaboration in language and music revitalization

Efforts to revitalize languages are situated within the wider context of efforts to maintain and revitalize intangible expressions of culture more broadly, from music to dance to ritual and ceremonial traditions. In some ways, language revitalization efforts are considerably further advanced in both theory and practice than those relating to other cultural expressions. Taking music as a example, this chapter draws together the scholarly field of language revitalization with the growing investigations into music sustainability, making the case for close collaboration between sociolinguists...
